The Basque country, where a unique language, cuisine and radical separatist elements have long resisted Spanish assimilation. In February the gray-blue waves of La Concha Beach in Donostia-San Sebastian were bitterly cold. After dark in Bilbao, relatives of incarcerated members of the Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) terrorist group gently marched for the transfer of their loved ones to prisons closer to home. Invented here was the brilliant gilda, a pintxo (appetizer) constructed of pickled peppers, olives and anchovies.

Painting by Antonio Ortiz Echagüe.

My friend Ellen and I took the night train to San Sebastian this weekend to cut costs on hostels. We didn't have much to do when we got in at 6:30, so we walked to the beach to watch the sun rise. We shivered in the morning cold as the city, sky, ocean, and mountains were slowly revealed.

La Playa de las Conchas (Shell Beach) in San Sebastian had all types of sand castles. At one end, the castles were made from solo cups, and the other... well, let's just say that mini sand gladiators would be content with their venue.

Spain's older population loves to go for walks in the late afternoon and on Sunday mornings. This past sunday, I encountered this pair chatting by the ocean. In Basque. In berets.

The tradition lives on.

These trees lined the waterfront park in the old part of San Sebastian. From far away, they look like an impressionist painting. Up close, they look like any old coniferous tree but they feel silky.

Some old pictures from a vacation in Mexico last year that I never posted

In order, the statues are

1. Triton and Siren in Puerto Vallarta on the Malecón

2. Isidro el Pescador (Isidro the Fisherman) in Puerto Vallarta

3. The Millennia in Puerto Vallarta on the Malecón

4. Still the Millennia

5. Escultura a los mineros (Miner’s Statue) in San Sebastián. Apparently someone stole his shovel or pickaxe, I don’t remember which
