Incredible.
I never expected to see these two stellar obsessions of mine overlap.
OMGG SHANES GETTING MARRIED THJS WEDKEBD AGAHHHH
I left a comment on the video, but I really wanted to make an infodump post about it to because Iâm a spooky little autistic. The newest Ghost Files episode reminded me of one of my favorite spooky history facts that I wanted to share:
CW: Dead people in photos (nothing graphic, very peaceful, but content warning all the same)
So the photo of Joyce and Tim in the archive room, they say one of them is dead and they donât know which, but in a lot of these âpost mortemâ photos, if you look closely, thereâs an interesting way to tell whoâs dead and whoâs alive.
âIn the 1800s, taking a photo of a dead body wasnât creepyâit was comforting. In an era when photos were expensive and many people didnât have any pictures of themselves when they were alive, post-mortem photography was a way for families to remember their deceased loved ones. This was especially true for children, whose mortality rate was much higher than it is nowâ (Little).
Now, back in good olâ 1867, there was a little more to taking a photo than a button on an iPhone 13, and it could often a couple of seconds for the photo to actually be taken, in which time people would naturally sway and twitch slightly, which is why people and faces are often blurry in these old photos. Itâs like when itâs dark and your phone canât focus, and it makes you hold your phone still while it takes the shot, but no matter how hard you try, it always comes out fuzzy.
Now, I donât know if you know this, people 9 times out of 10, dead people donât move. So when taking these photos, they remain still for the duration of the photo process. I tried to pick some pictures that would really demonstrate this, but itâs super chilling to see just how clear dead people are in these old photos, especially when put against living counterparts.
The one above is one of the clearest examples of this I could find online, but if youâre ever in the Winchester Mystery House, they have some super cool pictures hanging up that demonstrate this concept.
So Shane, Ryan, if you ever see thisâwell first of all I think Iâd probably scream because my favorite creators saw my postâknow that you can tell more than which looks âdead insideâ because, hey, donât we all?
What the FUCK is happening in here??
Man... I guess that means my future mysterious death wonât be investigated by the ghoul boys...
Ok so, Buzzfeed Unsolved Supernatural is going to be ending soon so I think itâs time I finally said it.
I donât care who you are or what you believe in but Buzzfeed Unsolved Supernatural is by far the best genuine paranormal investigation show there is. And itâs all because of one thing.
I am so confident that what they experience hasnât been faked. Sure they make it dramatic with the music and the video work, but everything they experience in it is true. And thatâs most likely because Shaneâs on there.
In contrast to unsolved, let me use another example to help my point. My Girlfriend was showing me a ghost hunting video by Garrett Watts and at numerous points I had to rewind it and point out where theyâve done some movie magic to make it look like a ghost was there. Itâs subtle enough to make the whole thing put you on edge, and itâs very entertaining to watch, and yet because of that editing, everything else you see looses itâs authenticity.
Now, a lot of ghost hunting shows donât do editing to the footage, like that video did. Yet they still manipulate their footage (by being overly dramatic with their acting and/or video editing, being bias on the existence of ghosts, using the tiniest thing as proof etc) enough for it to loose it reliability too. And so everything you see isnât the question of âDo ghosts existâ, rather, it becomes âAre these people trying to lie to meâ.
Like I said before, having a skeptic on the show suddenly makes the whole thing substantially more reliable, definitely when said skeptic even callâs bullshit on some of Ryanâs âevidenceâ. And so, as a skeptic myself, I am genuinely terrified of some of the things that has happened in unsolved. Because I know that whatever it was that scared me wasnât forged for the sake of scaring me. It is what it is, and believer or not, I canât deny some of the things that has happened in the show.
And thatâs terrifying.
Of course thereâs also the chemistry between Ryan and Shane which brings this show to life, but the main reason I love this show is because I can trust it. The show is truly trying to ask the question âdo ghosts exist?â And I respect that.
Iâve had these thoughts for a while now but since the series is ending soon, I thought I may as well put them down. [Plus, thereâs a youtuber who looks at body language to deduce sincerity, and he covered Unsolved and stated something similar. I recommend checking it out, itâs really cool]
