Psychiatrists? Smart As Hell, Dumb As Well | Lee Dokyeom

Psychiatrists. Psychiatrists were incredibly perceptive and observant. Psychiatrists were incredibly hardworking. Psychiatrists were incredibly empathetic and compassionate individuals. Psychiatrists were empathetic listeners. Psychiatrists were flexible, adaptable, always ready to take on new challenges and the unknown. Psychiatrists were….

Dumb as hell, or at least that’s what Soonyoung and Seungkwan thought as they saw the trainwreck that lay before them in the Seventeen Medical Center’s Emergency Department.

On one end of the Emergency Department, Soonyoung and Seungkwan saw one of their best friends, Dr. Lee Dokyeom standing in front of one of the treatment rooms clutching his tablet to his chest. There was a goofy, lovestruck smile stuck on his face, along with a faint blush dusted across his cheeks. Not to mention the hearts practically floating out of his eyes.

Following Dokyeom’s soft gaze to the other end of the Emergency Department, Soonyoung and Seungkwan saw you attending to a young patient. You were patting the little boy’s head while reassuring his parents that after a couple of days in the hospital, their son would be good as new. You were nodding empathetically to their concerns, noting that although this was a new environment and that their son would need to go through some serious treatment, it was the best course of action. You promised to check in on their son when they could not be around.

You were a new psychiatrist at the hospital, and it appeared that despite your short time there, you had already caught Dokyeom's attention. Obviously from his eyes which were transfixed on your form, he was completely enamoured by you.

Tucking a strand of the little boy’s hair behind his ear, you gave him and his parents one last reassuring smile before excusing yourself. You turned towards the nurses station, passing one of the other nurses your instructions. As you did so, you felt someone’s eyes on you. Looking up, your eyes met Dokyeom’s. You flushed under his tender gaze, and gave him a shy smile before continuing with your work.

Dokyeom blushed at your actions. He hid his face behind his tablet, but never averted his eyes from your form. You always had this effect on him. His heart would race, his face would heat up, butterflies in his stomach would go crazy. It was amazing how a simple glance from you could make him feel this way.

Soonyoung and Seungkwan watched the whole interaction between you and Dokyeom in exasperation. Since you joined the hospital staff, you both had been attracted to each other. You engaged in playful banter with each other which bordered on flirting. You exchanged shy lovestruck smiles and glances. You gave each other soft feathery touches. You even leaned into each other when you sat next to each other talking or discussing work. It was so painfully obvious to everyone except you and Dokyeom that you both liked each other. How could two psychiatrists, who were supposed to be some of the most perceptive people in the world, be so blind? Soonyoung and Seungkwan had seen you and Dokyeom diagnose patients on the spot based on one consultation and two, maybe three simple questions. Dokyeom had even been able to discern between genuine psychological problems and physiological problems which caused psychological problems before. Tiny details were never overlooked. But this, this obliviousness between you and Dokyeom. This was just pathetic. Or were you both just in denial?

Soonyoung and Seungkwan exchanged a knowing look. They sauntered forward to block Dokyeom’s view of you, causing Dokyeom to frown at them. Ignoring Dokyeom’s protests Soonyoung and Seungkwan dragged him into one of the empty treatment rooms.

Dokyeom shrunk under their gaze, stammering, “What… What is this?”

Soonyoung said firmly, “It’s an intervention. We’ve been watching you this entire time. You should ask Dr. L/n out.”

Dokyeom shook his head frantically, “No way. She doesn’t like me in that way. I actually think she likes Seungcheol. Haven’t you seen them together? He’s always paging her to consult on trauma patients. They make a great team.”

Soonyoung rolled his eyes, “Just because they make a great team, doesn’t mean she likes him. She likes you, you idiot. Don’t you see the way she treats you? The shy smiles, light touches. Dokyeom, she leans into you when you talk.”

Dokyeom protested, “No… no… she’s just a very nice person. She’s said before, she’s a more affectionate person. She’s treats everyone like that. Besides, I’ve been really obvious and forward with her. She doesn’t notice my flirting or my behaviour towards her.”

Seungkwan squinted his eyes at Dokyeom, scoffing, “If you think that, you need to get recertified for being a psychiatrist. Aren’t you supposed to be very perceptive? You both are so oblivious to each other’s feelings that it’s really pathetic. Just go ask her out will you? Soonyoung and I almost burst a blood vessel watching you two just now.”

Dokyeom pouted, “She doesn’t like me.”

Seungkwan massaged his brows, “Okay. You’re in denial. This calls for desperate measures. Soonyoung. Do it.”

Soonyoung nodded, firmly gripping Dokyeom’s shoulders. He looked into Dokyeom’s eyes seriously, “Dokyeom. She likes you. She treats you differently from everyone else. Think back to all the little things she does when she’s with you. Think about all the things she does for you. It’s the exact same things you do with her, and for her.”

Dokyeom averted his eyes from Soonyoung’s intense gaze awkwardly, and he began to think about what Soonyoung said. You treated him differently? Well, like him there were times when you would ask him to consult on a case you were working on… but then he found you really didn’t need his help at all. Still, the time you spent musing over the case was fun because you both were able to grab coffee together. He used this trick as an excuse to spend time with you. In doing the same thing, were you using work as an excuse to spend time with him? Oh you were, you sneaky, adorable, psychiatrist.

But what about your touchy behaviour? You were both naturally affectionate people. You really were like that with most people, though Dokyeom had to admit that now he thought about it, you were exceptionally touchy with him. You would normally only lightly tap other people on their arms in comfort or to get their attention. With him? In the same way he would treat you as delicately as a feather, you would softly caress his shoulders when he was feeling down, or when he was dealing with a particularly hard case. You never did that with Seungcheol, not even when Seungcheol’s patients were doing badly. Plus, you would lean exceptionally close to him, and only him. You normally kept a good distance between you and the other person, only leaning in close enough to listen to them well. With him? You would lean in close enough he could smell the perfume you wore, and close enough you could fluster him. Dokyeom swore there was always this glint or sparkle in your eye only when you were with him. He thought he was being delusional, maybe he wasn’t afterall?

How about the things you did for him? He would get you coffee when you were bogged down with work. Similarly, you would always get him a warm up of coffee without him asking. Sometimes you would leave it in his office along with an adorable sticky note saying “Hang in there!! <3” Then there were all the times you would offer to help him with a case he was struggling with… Actually, now that Dokyeom thought about it, you seemed to be the only one besides his friends who actually saw him when he was struggling. It was a thing all psychiatrists dealt with. They dealt with other people’s pain, but when it came to their own, no one else really noticed. There were times Dokyeom was overwhelmed, and yet somehow you always appeared. You were there for him. He could talk to you, or just sit there in silence as you sipped on your drinks. He thought you were treating him kindly as a fellow psychiatrist, someone who shared the same experiences as him… perhaps he was mistaken…

Dokyeom’s eyes widened at the realisation he came to after mulling over your behaviour and actions towards him. You treated him the same way he treated you. If someone else presented him with these examples, Dokyeom would tell them that you definitely liked them. And since he was the object of your affectionate behaviour, you liked him. Not Seungcheol. Him.

Dokyeom’s eyes widened further in horror and realisation. He let out an ear piercing screech. Looking at Soonyoung and Seungkwan’s smug expressions, Dokyeom covered his mouth. Soonyoung and Seungkwan were right. You liked him. He really was an oblivious idiot.

Suddenly, the curtains of the room they were in were pushed back harshly by you. You looked extremely worried. Your eyes darted around the room, back and forth between Soonyoung, Seungkwan and Dokyeom. Finally settling your gaze on Dokyeom, you rushed forward, taking his hands away from his mouth. You looked him over frantically.

When you established he had no visible injury or illness, you asked, slightly distraught, “Are you okay? I saw you go into this room, and then I heard the screech. Is everything okay? Are you hurting anywhere? Should I go get Dr. Choi? Do you need anything?”

Not noticing Soonyoung and Seungkwan slipping out from the room, you continued fussing over Dokyeom, “You were clutching your mouth. Is it your head? Maybe I should get Dr. Yoon. Oh no, or should I get a blood test for you? You’re close with Dr. Jeon in pathology? He would be able to get to it right away.”

Finally snapping out of his daze, Dokyeom watched you frantically punching orders into your PDA. His heart clenched. You were so worried about him. Dokyeom gently lifted his hands and placed them over yours, halting your movements. He looked into your frantic, wide, confused eyes, softly telling you, “Y/n, I’m okay. There’s nothing wrong with me. Really. Now calm down. Breathe Y/n. Breathe.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. So breathe Y/n. I’m fine.”

You nodded, taking in a deep breath to still your rapidly beating heart.

“Better?” Dokyeom asked.

“Yeah. Sorry. I was worried.” You replied sheepishly.

Hesitantly, you continued, “Is everything okay though?”

Dokyeom paused, answering cryptically, “Yes and no…”

You tilted your head, gesturing to him to continue.

Gathering up as much courage as he could muster, Dokyeom explained haltingly, “So… Y/n… You see… I… uhm, I like you. And I think… maybe I’ve come to the realisation that you like me too?”

“Oh.”

Dokyeom rubbed the back of his neck, “Yea… Sorry I might be overstepping boundaries here. Don’t worry about it. We can just forget this happened if I came to the wrong conclusion.”

You blurted, “NO. NO. Please… uhm, no you’re right. I do like you. It’s just, I thought you liked Dr. Hong from Pediatric Surgery.”

Dokyeom gave you an incredulous look, “What? You thought I liked Joshua?”

“Yea, I mean, you’re so close to him. And you’re so sweet with him, you always look at him so endearingly, I thought you had a thing for him.”

Dokyeom grasped your hand tighter, saying as sincerely as he could, “I don’t like Joshua. I don’t like the word crazy but Joshua? He is the word crazy personified. So no. I don’t like him. I like you. It’s always been you. I treat you and him differently. Don’t you see? My behaviour? My actions towards you?”

You stilled thinking back to all of Dokyeom’s actions and behaviour towards you. You let a wave of realisation wash over you, “Oh. OH. So you mean all the times you gave me that tender look? All the times you went the extra mile for me, helped me with cases, grabbed food for me. It was because you liked me?”

“Not liked. Like. I like you.”

You sulked, whining, “I’m sorry, you must think I’m some oblivious idiot.”

Dokyeom chuckled, “Don’t worry. I thought you liked Seungcheol. It was Soonyoung and Seungkwan who helped me realise you liked me back.”

“Seungcheol? Absolutely not. Not my type. I thought I was being really obvious towards you, but I guess not.”

“Don’t worry about it. I also thought I was being quite forward and that you weren’t interested. I guess, we were both in denial? We just wanted something to be true and ended up convincing ourselves that the spark between us wasn’t real, simply a figment of our own imaginations.”

You laughed, “That’s one way of putting it Dr. Lee… But let’s just say we were both oblivious idiots.”

Dokyeom’s heart fluttered. Your laugh was always so melodious. He gazed at you fondly, “Yea. We’re made for each other.”

You flushed, sputtering, “Uhm.. Well.. Yea.”

Dokyeom let go of your hand, and reached out his palm to you. Dokyeom blushed, “If you’re not too busy right now, maybe we could grab a cup of coffee together? Talk about this further?”

You smiled back at Dokyeom, placing your hand on his, “I would love nothing more.”

Watching you and Dokyeom from the nurses’ station, Seungkwan gagged, “They’re going to be that horridly affectionate couple aren’t they? We’re going to have to deal with that?”

Soonyoung lightly smacked Seungkwan, “We did a good thing.”

Seungkwan rolled his eyes at Soonyoung. Soonyoung would forever be the cheerful optimist. Seungkwan had never seen the older man angry or in a really foul mood before. That must be nice.

Soonyoung patted Seungkwan’s back, telling him to get back to work. Just as they turned to settle some paperwork, they heard frantic footsteps. Lifting their heads, they saw Jeonghan rushing towards the room you and Dokyeom were in. Unfortunately, before they could stop Jeonghan, he burst into the room, startling you and Dokyeom. You both yelped, recoiling away from each other in fright, but not letting go of each other’s hand.

Dokyeom turned to yell at Jeonghan, ie, the intruder who had interrupted that sweet moment with you, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”

Confused, Jeonghan furrowed his brows, “I was called in for a neuro consult for Dokyeom? I came as soon as I heard? I literally ran out of a surgery conference when I heard my Dokyeommie needed a consult.”

Taking in the silence that overcame the room, Jeonghan’s eyes flickered between Dokyeom’s annoyed expression, your sheepish smile, and your intertwined hands, “Wait… What did I miss?”
