The confidence in Alexander's chest wavered. He didn't have a normal heart, his was a mechanical wonder that operated through cutting-edge science and cold logic. The small surge of adrenaline in his system wasn't enough to disrupt the precise rhythm. Though his brain sent a signal to pick up the pace, to hammer his chest like a drum because he was excited for reasons unknown, the device deemed the signal a frivolous one and operated as normal.

That was to say, the sudden, blossoming smile struck him hard. Were he normal, his heart would attempt to pound through his sternum and out of his body. Instead he was left oddly calm, with a foolish, boyish little smile tickling at his lips.

She would have remembered him. To a man with impaired memories, that was one of the highest compliments.

It didn't matter so much how abnormal he was in that moment — his age may as well halved when she smiled at him, because the man that stood before her had been reduced to some puppy-faced teenager. At least for a few breaths.

The Confidence In Alexander's Chest Wavered. He Didn't Have A Normal Heart, His Was A Mechanical Wonder

"I'm Alexander." he replied, then clarified after another breath. "I think."

His own brow furrowed a little at his own words, he shook his head, exhaled a nervous little breath. Perhaps he would remain feeling like a puppy-faced teenager for a few breaths more. There was so much he wanted to say. Yet his words slipped through his fingers like the fine sand of the desert.

That creased lantern subtly brightened and flickered between them, taking on a different hue. It coloured as though the lifestream flowed between them, around them, gently guiding them to stand together again.

His eyes lowered in an acknowledging glance, though little more as his attention bounced right back to Melissa's face. He didn't understand the significance of it. Call him thick-skulled but he assumed that in a place like this, it was completely steeped in the lifestream. The way local scholars and planetologists spoke, he thought those wisps of green were part of the fabric here in Cosmo Canyon.

It took outside reactions for him to even consider something was different. That perhaps fire-lit lanterns didn't usually take on the appearance of the lifestream's green flow. He blinked then and finally broke his quiet spell. "I have a strange feeling, like I was supposed to meet you. I understand that sounds... crazy."

From the moment Melissa saw him, it was impossible to truly focus on anything else around her - in a certain way, it was a shame given the importance of that ceremony to the local people, and the fact it had been one of the reasons to bring the woman all the way to the canyons itself. However, it all seemed to pale in comparison to the inevitable closeness prompted by the stranger's decided steps, moving through the crowd as quietly as he could.

Perhaps, in a different situation, Melissa would have allowed her gaze to stray or even her feet to take her elsewhere - but there was no perception of a threat, no sense of discomfort. If anything, her heart thumped louder with something akin to anxiety, as if a part of her willed that closeness even though the rational mind failed to provide the 'why'. It was only when he approached the songstress enough to talk that some sort of tension evaporated, and the change from apology into hushed murmur had a smile blossoming on the woman's face.

How fascinating - he had experienced something so similar to her own feelings; was it the Cosmo Canyon and the lifestream at work, as the local scholars explained during the seminars?

"I do not think so," Melissa shook her head softly, suddenly aware of the fragile lantern that both hands had started to seemingly crush out of some inexplicable need to cling to something tangible. Loosening the pressure there, the brunette added more words with the same quiet tone that he had used to address her in an attempt not to disturb the people leading the speeches. "I would have remembered you otherwise. It does feel like this... Happened before."

As absurd as the notion was (or as cliché as it sounded), it was also endearingly comforting. Melissa had only sensed that calm warmth that translated as some sense of belonging when at home - when looking at the sea, watching waves rolling and seafoam dissolving under sunlight. And yet, there she was - miles away from the coast and going through the same.

"My name is Melissa - this is the first time I come here, actually. I live in Costa," the brunette explained, eyes locking with his and gazing at his face as if both trying to place his features and at the same time just bask in that glorious sensation of loneliness being suspended by a strange man, of all people, "What is your name?"
