Main. Verse i
Follows canon.
Vigilante AU. Verse ii
This is not a traitor verse, as he will not be working with the League of Villains, and this is something that will be more of a canon divergence.
Shoto Todoroki wants to be a hero, not because his father wants him to be, in fact it’s in spite of that. He knows that hero society is flawed, just look at what the Number Two hero does to his family while still being praised by the public, but he wants to be one of the good heroes. He wants to prove that he can be good, but he also wants to prove to his father that he can be Number One without his help. It’s not until he goes up against Izuku Midoriya at the Sports Festival that his way of thinking is challenged. After this, Shoto develops friendships and a tweaks his goal.
He doesn’t necessarily want to be Number One, he just wants to help people. It’s after the fight with Stain and the ensuing talk with the chief of police that Shoto really starts to believe that the way things are set up aren’t doing heroes any favors. At best, it’s naive, at worst? It’s giving the villains an easily exploitable advantage, one that he’s seen them use before. He just doesn’t see justice in the system that would see his friends or himself punished for trying to stay alive, especially given their status as minors even if they’re training to be pro heroes. This is exacerbated further after the rescue with Bakugou at Kamino. From there, Shoto was slowly forced to admit that he wanted to protect people without worrying about the system that seemed determined to impede him at every turn.
The change begins slow, at UA he’s louder about what he believes to be injustices or useless rules and is often more brutal when it comes to villains. If they’re trying to kill him or those around him, he sees no reason to hold back. Things become more clear once he graduates UA, he is happy to help classmates and other heroes, but he does not join a hero agency and the murder of a few villains are beginning to raise some brows.
