You knew that you were naive. You were seemingly trusting Marc Spector but the longer you knew Steven Grant and the more you spent the time with him, the harder it was to really care at all. You were sure that he was nothing like Marc. He was gentle and concerned with saying something wrong and so sweet. He was also alive and didn’t seem to have the same weight on his shoulders that Marc carried.
You already knew that you would be seeing Marc the next day. So, you had taken your last opportunity to invite Steven over before you were embroiled - once again - in the plot of Ammit’s followers to steal the scarab. You were still bruised up from the last time you had gone out but you had invited Steven over despite it all.
You had long become used to lying about why you were always injured. And he took you at face-value, just like everyone did. Nobody questioned your lies and that was what made them easy to keep up with because you seemed so trustworthy.
But you hated thinking about the morality of what you were doing. So you instead just focused on making the apartment look decent for Steven. He was meant to be over in ten minutes and you had gotten caught up in research and never actually bothered to clean.
So, you were rushing about like a maniac in an attempt to make it look half decent as you threw clothes into your washing basket, haphazardly sorting into whites and colours, while also trying to clean the dishes so you could let them dry while he was over.
It was a mess but you managed to finish just in time for the doorbell to ring. You quickly wiped the suds and water from your hands, throwing the hand towel into the hamper before you pulled the apartment door open. Steven looked adorable and so happy. You wished you could be as joyful as him but you weren't an optimist.
“Hey.” You said with a grin. You let him pass and then closed the door behind him, “Do you drink by any chance?” You knew he was somewhat religious and every religion had their own practices. your family were Catholic, in their own way, so you wanted to at least try and respect it.
“Not really but I sometimes will,” He said with an unsure smile. You nodded and locked the door now it was closed.
“I bought a bottle of wine for tonight but I don’t know. We don’t have to drink it.” Steven watched as you crossed over to the kitchen. You grabbed your wine on the way and placed it on the counter. You then turned to face him and smiled.
The two of you quickly began to talk and as the night went on, you both ended up having a glass of wine. (It was Steven’s idea.) You hadn’t even thought about the alcohol and he said he didn’t mind having one glass.
So that’s what they did, one glass and then it was put away. It was enough to relax Steven a little more and allow your anxious thoughts to slip away a little.
It also meant that when you put on some background music, you both had the courage to dance and sing together for a bit. But the queue finished after a couple songs, leaving the two of you in silence. Your arms wrapped around Steven’s neck and his arms comfortably rested around your waist. your head against his chest. You were listening to the soft thump of his heartbeat as you swayed together. Slow-dancing in the silence.
And for the first time in a long time, you felt calm. Your mind quietened as you just enjoyed the silence between the two of you.
