Nostalgia Factor: "The Ren & Stimpy Show"
This show was, and still is, ridiculous. When people think about smut and stupidity being shown to children, this show is probably exactly what they're thinking of. I don't even think I need to say that I loved every second of it. The show follows Ren, a chihuahua, and Stimpy, a cat, as they go one the craziest adventures one can imagine. The episodes have almost no continuity between them, so they were allowed end episodes however they wanted without it affecting the next one. The most outstanding feature of the show was just how much they managed to get away with. They cursed, got violent, and got sexual. The censors were apparently asleep when this show was being aired. I watched a couple of episodes relatively recently, and one of the first lines of one of the episodes was the word "crap" repeated over and over again. That would never fly on children's television today. They got so much past the radar that it's kind of absurd. The humor in the show came from the oddities that Ren and Stimpy come across. One of my personal favorites is Powdered Toast Man and his tendency to tell people (including the Pope) to clench tenaciously to his buttocks. In reality, this show is more of a sketch show in the vein of SNL of MadTV than an actual sitcom or children's cartoon. After the show was canceled, they attempted to revive it with a more adult-oriented version on Spike TV. I never watched it, but, from what I understand, it was terrible. That's understandable. While the show wasn't really that subtle, it still needed to be clever enough to get things past the censors. It walked a tightrope between children and adults, and that's why it worked. Without the need for cleverness, the show really had nothing going for it. It would straight for the toilet humor and gross-out gags, which is apparently exactly what it did. I don't know if I enjoy this show as much now as I did when I was a kid, but it still holds a special place in my childhood for teaching me to call people idiots. Thanks, Ren and Stimpy!
