Ooh I’ve been meaning to ask, what aspect or event from Stretch and Release is most similar to what happened for you in cheerleading? Also, because I’m utterly fascinated, what was cheerleading like for you, were you more in line with Arya or Gendry in the fic?

A LOT of the aspects of that story are based on things I have either experienced or witnessed. A big thing that started the initial inspiration was talking to a friend of mine about when big, strong guys join college teams and even though they are a huge asset with actual skills, how hard it is to get them to understand counting, transitioning, and performing. Those things are, on the whole, “easier”; however, it’s amazing how long it can take for them to sink in. For people who have been doing it for years, it can be quite frustrating 😂
Somehow that lead me to Gendrya and Gendry being a beast and natural stunter/tosser and Arya being both impressed and wanting to kill him at the same time for being so clueless about everything else!
Plus - flyers and bases falling in love is incredibly common 💕 I have numerous friends who used to stunt together whose weddings I have gone to in recent years! The environment of working and spending so much time together paired with the necessary trust that you have to build just tends to have that effect 😉
Most things that Gendry notices happening are real things that happen (dramatic coach speeches, terrible loud music, kind of blacking out during the performance, hating your life for the whole season but somehow being completely ready to do it all again) but it was really fun to try to put it into the perspective of someone who was experiencing it all for the very first time, and as an adult!
I would say I am definitely more like Arya in this than Gendry, hahaha! I am a cheer lifer and take it very seriously. Plus I would take matters into my own hands as she did - don’t have time to wait for no man to make a move 😇
