i feel like i could both write a 100 pages on this and write nothing at all because i dont know what to say

i adore my culture and the rich poetry and prose that it has preserved; but i can’t recall ever reading about someone like me. i often feel strongly alienated from my country and people bc they consider queer people to be a ‘foreign fad’ so this is me digging my claws in my history, my ancestors and my culture and saying nope. you cant separate us from what we are; we exist, we always have but there are no overt records of us. so im making one

it was only right to depict the two characters who helped me come out to myself. i wrapped them in all my childhood memories, my grandparents’ attic in the village, the terlitsi my grandma used to knit for me, the hoe my grandpa taught me how to use, the embroidery on cotton cloth and the mountains that are iconic for my region. and they look so natural there, bc i belong, i belong in bulgaria as much as anyone else.

i know steve and bucky were created for a very important reason and i don’t intend to erase that; im borrowing them so i can bridge the gap between my identities

im borrowing them and naming them with love, stéfan and srundaka; it feels so right that buck translates so perfectly into my language, a nickname ive seen in the stories i grew up with.  

its the first time ive choked up w tears while im drawing, but its happiness and pride so its ok
