Landscape Language Vibrissae (noun) – tactile whiskers Just like cats and many other mammals, squirrels have vibrissae, or long, specialized whiskers that help them sense the environment around them. Squirrels have vibrissae around the nose, on their cheeks, above the eye, and on the throat. They also have some near the wrist and elbow, and a few on the belly and base of the tail. It is believed vibrissae can supplement short-distance vision, letting the animal sense fine details of texture and easily navigate complex terrain, like forests.
