Is it too early in the morning to talk about my "child Halsin got ill and nearly died, but Thaniel used his magic to cure Halsin, but was unable to do it with his family, which is why Halsin survived while the rest of his family succumbed to illness over the years" theory? Which also dovetails with my "Thaniel is Silvanus's son" and "Halsin is/was Silvanus's Chosen" theories?
