I know adverbs are Controversial, but “said softly” means something different than “whispered” and this is the hill I will die on.

all whispering tells you is that the speaker's intent was to keep their voice at a low level
but 'said softly'??
that tells you their intent is softness!! gentleness perhaps!! they're speaking quietly with care!
that just tells you SO MUCH MORE about the words beyond just their volume level. And I think that's very neat <3
