saaaammmmeee i think it is a combo of things for me personally one being we get their story and any mystery is generally resolved second is the mains are often a generic everyperson who the reader or audience can relate to or self insert into the more weird specific characters that are well written have goals ans motivations that go unexplored but also they get to be more colorful or weird or cringe or not generically likeable and thats the part i love the mystery plus the weird/specific and then i get to flesh it out via art (less often now) or writing or i get to imagine all the possibilities of why someone did x or what happened 5 years ago that did y to side character abc anyway... i agree!
