you sacrifice yourself

what drives you is the fact that you feel beholden to others. you protect them, at the cost of your own safety. maybe it's one specific person you're weak for, maybe it's anybody and everybody -- you jump in front of that sword, that bullet, that cracking whip because you would rather be the one to hurt. you think that pain is most beautiful when misdirected. you believe that this makes you strong, a hero. danger doesn't faze you anymore. you learned not to fear fire or drowning; you don't love them, but sometimes you think you love the call of death. you were waiting for a reason to meet it, really.

pyrrhic victory

is this even a happy ending? you don't, technically, lose. but what did you have to sacrifice? how many people are no longer standing at your side by the end? how can you move on, knowing that all of your effort was mostly in vain? did your actions even matter? perhaps it would have been better to do nothing at all. perhaps you would have hurt less. you will not be protected by your legacy. you will not be honored by future generations. and before you even get to leave behind a name so hollow, you must live, and die, and try to understand why you were placed at the center of so much war.

you help the enemy win

you truly think that you are doing what's right, up until the very end. the path you chose set you apart from your friends, your loved ones, your place in society, but you insisted that you were only protecting the things and people you care about. you were tricked. or, at the very least, you were manipulated. it is partly your fault for being naive, but obviously you will not be forgiving yourself for that again. perhaps if you had been given the whole truth, you would have acted differently, and the blood of your friends would not be on your hands. but time is a hard rule in tragedies. you get one chance. this was yours.
