"The wanderers are taken care of. Are you hurt anywhere? Don't lie."

“I’m—“

The automatic response gets cut off by Dolasach’s own realization that no, she isn’t fine, and the fact that she couldn’t join in him battle made it extremely clear to her that there’s no lying her way through this.

As the dust settles around them and the final vestiges of the fallen Wanderer’s dissipate into nothing, the pain in her leg from an attack she failed to dodge makes itself even more known. At first glance, it wouldn’t seem like anything was wrong thanks to her pants obscuring everything, but judging from the pain, she had to wonder if something had been fractured.

She sighs and leans back against the tree she’d been resting on for support. It’s getting dark, and they’re in a no-hunt zone. It’s best if she didn’t waste their time trying to put on a brave face.

“I… Don’t think I can walk on my own.”

"Right."

She takes a moment to try and estimate just how much she'd need to move herself to get on his back. If she weren't in pain, she might've taken a moment to think about the proximity and physical closeness.

"Let me..."

But any thoughts about where they both were emotionally outside of this specific situation were pushed to the very, very back of her mind. What mattered was getting out of here, soon.

After a deep breath, she lifts herself off of the ground and supports her own weight long enough to climb onto his back. The wind gets knocked out of her lungs as a sharp pain shoots up her injured leg, but she manages to secure herself as well as she could on Xavier's back.

"I think I'm good," she says, a little breathless and close to his ear. "Sorry about this... I should've paid more attention to where that Wanderer was..."

The little light creature provides a cute little distraction from the lingering pain in her leg. She pokes at it, fascinated, endeared, and some part of her sad that it’ll only be around for as long as Xavier keeps it around.

She sensed him thinking over what had transpired during the fight in the midst of their silence and squeezes his shoulder. He might not be able to see it, but frown could be heard in her tone.

“You were already carrying the fight, Xav. The least I could’ve done was fend for myself well enough that I’d come out of it uninjured… Or at least, not this injured…”

She sighed. He may be strong and skilled enough to take on several high ranking Wanderers by himself and come out of the battle largely unscathed but—

“Seriously… Thanks.”

The silence lingers around them once more, the only sound between them being Xavier’s footsteps through the forest. Normally she wouldn’t mind, but the fact that it was her alone with him, and this close made her feel… Awkward.

“I…,” she begins, unable to take the silence. She didn’t want to give her mind time to think about that lingering issue between them. “I… Guess you’ll be back to working solo for a while, huh? Doubt Jenna’s gonna let me out on the field again for at least a month…”

“Don’t want to go to work without your battery pack?”

She tries to joke around, but she can’t even muster a chuckle at her own words. “Kidding aside… I’m glad you’ll be spending time with your friends.”

The little light creature’s glow was enough to drown out the faint red glow of the ring around his neck, but she noticed how it briefly flickered. Now she was on alert too, her eyes scanning their surroundings and her Evol heightening her senses for any metaflux fluctuations.

But she still tries to carry on with conversation, even more compelled to do so when a familiar topic is raised. There’s an underlying frustration to her tone.

“Someone will, whether I want him to or not. But I… I suppose the forced bedrest will be good for me. Can't let myself stay benched for too long when I already have the most leaves and absences between everyone in our team..."

Even when it was all warranted--between her heart condition and all the injuries that came with being a Hunter. It can't be helped. But still...

Her breath catches in her throat, and her grip on him tightens.

"Xavier..."

It would've been easier if he held some distaste for her. Then maybe she wouldn't be feel bad about that fact that he's still putting in the effort to try and comfort her when he didn't have to.

Her words come out of her mouth before she even realizes what she's saying. Maybe this wasn't the best time or place to say anything that addressed the elephant that's been in the room for the last several weeks, but she couldn't help it anymore.

Hearing him say all those things to her just... Made her feel bad.

"Xavier... You're too good to me, you know."

She manages to brace herself for the sudden shift in their surroundings; feeling him struggle after teleporting to safety is what catches her off guard.

Once he set her down, she’s finally able to check her Hunter’s Watch and sees that she’s able to get a signal. Her brows furrow at the shift in his tone and it stings her more than she expects despite herself, but she focuses first on requesting medical assistance from the Association, notifying them through the Watch that there’s two people out where they are.

“Alright, they shouldn’t take too long to—Xavier?”

With a concerned and somewhat panicked tone at seeing his back turned, she calls out to him.

“Xavier, you’re not leaving are you? I called aid for the both of us.”

After the way he staggered right after teleporting, she isn’t convinced that he’s fine. As difficult as it was to navigate their relationship right now, she still didn’t want him hurting himself.
