Urbania Helva: Urbania, in her 30s, is the geat-grand-daughter of the last Prince of the previous dynasty. She is the last survivor of her family, after everyone else either died naturally, was murdered, or was executed for treason. Although her family had lost a lot of prestige toward the end of its rule, it is still fondly remembered by common people. For that reason, Urbania has been engaged to many ambition young men, including the current Prince's grandson and heir who frequently humiliated her before his early death. She had been in love with Medka's brother since they were teenager, and he returns the feeling.
Bolad: Bolad, in his 30s, is Medka's half brother. He was sent to Camundis as a hostage when he was around 15, and quickly realised he was unlikely to ever see his home again. He has since then done his best to become a perfect Camundi, and has even applied for citizenship, although by the point Medka re-enters Bolad's life, that application is in limbo. Because he has been cut off from his people for so long, he sometimes takes Medka's attempts to act according to their culture as a personal attack. He's not always wrong about that, as Medka struggles to understand why Bolad chose to completely join their enemies. Aside from his looks, Bolad had turned himself into the ideal citizen, he has powerful friends including the Prince's half brother, although due to circumstances when they were younger, they're not as close as they used to be. He is in love with Urbania and the hope of marrying her is one reason he applied for citizenship.
Vitilius Vatinus: Vitilius, in his late 20s, is the half brother of the current Prince. Due to a serious illness when he was young, he has a weak constitution and is nearly blind. For a long time this kept him out of the succession line, but since there are no more other male heir in the family, his half-brother now has to consider him as an option. Vitilius is clever and good tempered, but more ambitious than he lets on, and willing to do whatever it takes to rule. He helps Medka multiple times, partly out of affection for Bolad to whom he feels he owes a debt, partly because he hopes to use Medka as a tool to position himself as the best candidate as next ruler of Camundis. He may or may not have made a deal with the Magpie King to get rid of his recently deceased grand-nephew who was heir to the throne.
Posthumus Vatinus: Posthumus, in his late 60s, is the current Prince of Camundis, sole rule of the known civilised world. He is a dutiful man who brought the Principate to an unprecedented size and prosperity, and his main worry is now to ensure this accomplishment survives him. When Medka meets him, Posthumus has recently lost his grandson, his only direct male heir, and he takes Medka as a guest as a distraction from that loss. Posthumus is usually a fair man, but he has some resentment toward his much younger half-brother Vitilius, as he feels that their father's very late second marriage was in bad taste and exposed their family to ridicule. Even though Vitilius has already proven that he is competent and dutiful, Posthumus would rather look for another option for an heir.
