They Hear The Same Words But They Do Not Mean The Same Thing And Its Killing Me This Is Why The Idiots Must Talk To Each Other - Tumblr Posts
“Nothing lasts forever”
Okay so obviously even on a surface level, this HURTS. BADLY. And it’s already kinda established that Aziraphale meant his earthy possessions (bookshop, ect), while Crowley took it as their arrangement and relationship.
Crucially though, I think it speaks to how brainwashed he really is. Not even necessarily by miracled coffee or any dirty tactics, just heaven being heaven and Az feeling obligated to listen to the metatron.
After all, in season one, one of the ways in which Crowley tries to get Aziraphale to agree to help him stop Armageddon is by listening material things he wouldn’t have anymore. While choosing Heaven and believing he can make a difference is VERY in character and a crucial mistake he needs to make for his development, the idea that Az can just, let go is so unbelievably foreign to me, so I was thinking about what his thought process could possibly be if we rule out miracled obedience.
In fact, after Crowley leaves he even seems concerned about the bookshop.
THEN, I thought, possibly, Aziraphale is an lying angel who lies.
AZIRAPHALE DOES NOT WANT TO LEAVE EARTH AT ALL, HE DOES NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE BOOKSHOP. HE ONLY SAYS THAT TO TRY AND GET CROWLEY TO GO WITH HIM BECAUSE HE THINKS THEY WILL BE HAPPIER IN HEAVEN. HE IS WILLING TO GIVE UP HIS SHOP BC HE WANTS TO SEE THE CROWLEY WHO WAS HAPPY TO MAKE THE STARS. THE POOR DEMON TAKES THE WORDS IN THE EXACT OPPOSITE WAY THEY ARE MEANT. “NOTHING LASTS FOREVER” IS HIM PLEADING WITH CROWLEY TO GO WITH HIM BECAUSE IF HE REFUSES TO GO TO HEAVEN AND LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE BEHIND THEN THEY BOTH LOOSE EVERYTHING INSTEAD OF ONLY SOME THINGS.
This is likley an over analysis, do with it what you will but I’m choosing to believe it.
