Okay this is last post about limbus "theory"crafting for today, but I want to come back to the limbus opening once more. It's really interesting to me how the sinner faces are crossed out by marker/blood, and what kind of vibe it carries. Obviously spoilers for the ch1-4

I think it makes sense to group the crossings into the following archetypes:

blindfold: willingly turning one's vision from the reality, one's vision is obstructed by oneself. if vision in this context is the ability to move onward, then a blindfold shows an internal obstacle that the sinner has to overcome. see ishmael/yi sang

"gouged out" eyes: one's vision is obstructed unwillingly, by the others. in this context the sinner's obstacle is "another", see meursault/hong lu

"foggy" eyes: like a blindfold, it obstructs one's vision, but I think in this context the sinner has lost themselves to some degree. the obstacle is less about seeing where you should go, and more of knowing where you should be? see heathcliff/sinclair

"crossed" eyes: to cross something is to deny its existence, to void it. this one is interesting. see faust/outis/ryoushu (surprisingly)

additionally, some sinners have their face "bloodied", making it hard to determine the shape of the marker

Analysis under the cut

First of all, Ishmael/Meursault/Faust

We have:

Ishmael: eyes blindfolded, probably by revenge. if I recall correctly she's one of the best wrath generation units in the game, if this is anything

Meursault: eyes gouged out, I think this relates to the "chain of others"

Faust: eyes crossed, moreover crossed in the shape of a christian cross. as Faust has made a contract with a demon, it's a very interesting touch.

Then, Outis/Hong Lu/Gregor

Outis eyes are obstructed by a cross. she is "nothing", her existence denied.

Hong Lu's eyes are gouged out, and his mouth is covered in blood. this one is super interesting. we know that he's a possession to his family, so the gouged out eyes make sense - his theme will most likely be getting over his family! but his mouth being bloodied may mean that whenever he tried to talk, he was only met with abuse instead, so he learned how to mask his true self as this innocent-looking know-nothing rich boy.

Gregor's face, I think, is originally blindfolded, but it's covered in too much blood to make out fine details. again, here blood means abuse, and he's a veteran of war. I don't think we fully solved his trauma yet, as the first chapter was rather short, so maybe something to look out for?

Then, Heathcliff/Yi Sang/Rodion

Heathcliff's vision is "foggy". I think this hints at him losing himself after the death of Catherine (assuming it's them in the body bag). he doesn't want to solve his trauma, he just wants to let it out, which hurts him in the long run.

Yi Sang, as we know, has willingly decided to obstruct his "vision", and his whole chapter is him coming to realization that he shouldn't cast side glances and look at Dongrang straight. you can make an argument that he suffered more from the N corp., but his downfall was specifically his decision to ignore the world around him. if you consider the blood stain to be covering his eyes as well, it can hint at the resulting outcome - he closed his eyes, and it hurt both him and everyone he cared about.

Rodion's eyes are gouged out, and the shape reminds me of the tear stains. we know that her big downfall was killing the Middle tax collector, and it's something she regrets to this day. Sonya says she did it for herself, but I don't think she originally was this selfish - it may have been born from a genuine concern for Yurodivije. this one is hard.

And finally, Don Quixote/Sinclair/Ryoushu. This one is interesting to me.

Don Quixote's vision is blindfolded. remember in her teaser she said "what... what is this obscene sight unfolding before my eyes"? that, and her delusions, if not a mask she puts on? she's also covered in blood. like, intensely. to the point it's hard to make out the shape of the marker. It either represents the past abuse, or the level of violence she goes to under her delusion.

Sinclair's vision is "foggy", like Heathcliff's. I think blood is obvious: it represents his family getting murdered by N corp. foggy vision here would point at him coming to terms with who he wants to be, not giving in to the outer pressure, whole "bird breaking out of the shell" situation. symbolical of a chick learning to fly.

Ryoushu's eyes are crossed out. I have no fucking clue why. she's a mystery. might be because the person she cared about is already dead, so her final meaning of existence is gone, hence her own existence is "cancelled". maybe limbus promised to bring that person back.
