Tron: Legacy 3D - A review from a fangirl.
I was lucky enough to get into the previews for Tron: Legacy 3D last night. I LOVED IT!
Before I explain this further I should really point out a few things:
I'm a former girl gamer. And I don't mean I play Sims and I think it's awesome. I can't stand Sims and I think it's a stupid game. I play FPS (First person shooters), fighting games and any car-related game. Imagine how excited I was when Grand Theft Auto came out. I'm a straight console girl and my love of gaming stretches back to the '80's when my brother and I had an Atari (!!!).
I'm a Daft Punk fan girl. Oh my god. I can't even put it into words. If they ever come to NZ, I will empty my bank account and credit cards to see them. I will do unspeakable things if it means I can get backstage. I'm not kidding.
3D is one of the best things to ever happen to movies. This is not just my belief, it's a fact. Although they're pretty much interchangable (my ego is bigger than you think).
I love pretty lights. I love them in the same way I love my GHD's. To put this in perspective, I once thought my GHDs had broken. I sobbed my heart out for over three hours. True story (It turns out there was a power cut. My baby was okay. I cried happy tears after I found out).
Tron: Legacy 3D was a movie that combined all 4 of the above. Tron: Legacy (sequel to the original Tron) is a futuristic movie about a videogame set within a videogame, which means that it's got lots and lots of pretty lights. Most of the film was shot in 3D. The score for the movie was done by Daft Punk. Naturally, the hype surrounding this movie has been awesome. Pop culture bitches like myself have been waiting for this for months.
I couldn't figure out how to describe this film in one sentence. Luckily, a friend (who'd strong armed his way into getting my extra ticket to the preview) came up with the perfect line:
A son follows his father into computers
Sweet. Sounds like the Disney film that it is. There's a bit more happening than that though. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), main character in the first movie, disappeared 20 years ago. His fun wayward son, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) unknowingly dives into a computer game to rescue him. Coolness ensues.
Despite having Olivia Wilde as the token female, this as a very sexless movie. There is even a scene where the lead character has hsi clothes cut off by 4 gorgeous fembots in fierce heels - but the camera pans so far back that we can't see any of the good stuff. No nudity please, this is a big budget Disney film. Good thing they made up for it with coolness.
Getting Daft Punk to create this soundtrack was a genius move. They are known for their futuristic electro-pop as well as only ever performing in full spacesuits, not unlike the ones seen in this movie To steal a line from a review by The Guardian:
By any reckoning, the Tron sequel is the film Daft Punk were born to soundtrack, featuring, as it does, avatars wearing futuristic bike leathers and go-faster (harder-louder-stronger) helmets.
God, that summed it up so well. At times, Tron: Legacy feels like it's their best music video ever. They even make an awesome cameo. The Daft Punk score has a great retro feeling about it when we first enter the computer world. It's a great little nod to the score of the original film and I really enjoyed that nice touch.
There were references to previous Sci-Fi films and other aspects of pop culture. I know that nods to other facets of pop culture have been done to death since Shrek burst onto the scene, but I don't care - when done well, it works. There's nothing like a quick wink from a movie to media whores like myself. It all helps to inflate out false sense of superiority. I appreciated it!
I've seen a bunch of reviews from wannabe movie critics people who didn't like Tron: Legacy because the storyline was terrible. Well fuckin hell! It's a sequel based on a video game from the '80s - you ain't getting Citizen Kane. Lower your expectations. Intricate plot and awesomeness are not the same thing. This movie only promised to show us awesomeness, complete with pretty lights and scored by Daft Punk, That's all it delivered. Good times.
I'm seeing this again on Friday night, during a late-night showing in a bigger theatre, on a bigger screen with louder speakers.
I can't wait.

I always wanted to try and draw a realistic portrait of Castor Zuse from TRON:Legacy, but never had the confidence to try. Also I found these Clip Studio Brushes and I wanted to try them out!
I'm so obsessed with Tron Legacy it's just this beautiful little fucked up movie that is INTENSELY dedicated to being a synaesthetic art piece while also hitting Disney's mandated sad dad storyline from the late 2000s
But EVERY SCENE is gorgeous. Almost every FRAME you could put on your wall as an art piece. Daft Punk did the soundtrack! You can't GET shit like this anymore it's just a one in a billion event where everything came together right
They got away with so much and no disney movie will ever go this hard ever again
