The third person- part 1

this is the first installment of a three part series and there will be a time jump between each. During this, Kari have already been together for a while.

September 2013

It was a typical lazy saturday evening, Kit over on Mari’s house in their room. The two teenagers were lying of Mari’s bed, both under several layers of covers and looking at Mari’s phone as she texted an overly concerned Tessa, reassuring her that it wasn’t her son that was dead, only his phone’s battery.

“Feels really weird, someone being so concerned for you when you visit your girlfriend’s house” mumbled Kit.

Mari shifted in the bed to look at kit. He wore a strange expression. Kit had mentioned many times that he wasn’t used to having someone care for him. Well, he didn’t say the exact same thing, but Mari knew him enough to know what he meant. Their heart broke a little each time Kit hinted at it.

But Jem and Tessa weren’t the first people who had cared for Kit, apparently. Kit had informed her about the blackthorns, with whom he had stayed for a short duration of time. The two of them had stayed up late during some nights during which he talked about them. His voice contained fondness when talking about Dru Blackthorn, loss when about Livvy, but when he spoke of Ty…

He didn’t sound like he missed Ty only as a friend, there was something more to it, Mari could tell. The only problem was that they could put their finger on what exactly happened. Mari always wanted to ask Kit the question but never did as she was afraid that his reaction wouldn’t be ideal.

“Did something ever happen between you and Ty?”. The words slipped out of her mouth before she knew it.

Kit took some time to register the words. After he did, he shook his head. “Nothing did, we were just friends who grew apart after the other’s sister died”

That wasn’t enough to convince Mari. “Why do I have the feeling that you’re lying to me?” they sat up straight and asked.

“Seriously, nothing romantic happened between us” reassured Kit, also sitting up to reach Mari’s level.

“but the way you talk about him, it’s just…” Mari started, but left the rest of the sentence in the air between them.

Kit sighed. “Nothing happened between us, but I was- like that idiot Will Herondale said to Tessa- catastrophically in love with him. I’m sure he doesn’t feel the same way”

Mari was silent for a some time. when the time passed, she asked in a small voice “are you still in love with him?”

Kit hesitated. “Yes” he confirmed, closing his eyes shut.

Mari took his hand and squeezed it. “It’s okay”

“You don’t have a problem with it? That we’re dating and that I am still not over Ty?”

“Do you love me?” inquired Mari calmly.

“Of course, I’ve loved you since-”

“Then I don’t have a problem with it. I’m not going to ask you to chose between Ty and me. He was you’re first love and you can’t just forget your first love like that” she said “and Kit?“

“What?”

“I love you too”

ik a lot people want their relationship to be a casual one bc Ty is the only one for Kit, but I personally hate the ‘Herondales love but once’ thing so I did this.
