"That would be all." You told the librarian. There was such a big pile of books in front of her that you could hardly see her. You had only thought of bringing two or three home, but you found yourself getting more and more absorbed by the time you were finished.

It wasn't your fault; there were multiple new books that day.

You had decided it would be for the best to inverse yourself in new stories as Jeonghan's coming back for his book seemed closer.

You didn't want to get too attached to the characters in that story, but that goal was getting more unrealistic considering the amount of time you had spent reading it.

"There would be new books coming tomorrow, if you're interested." The woman told you. You considered it, but decided it would be for the best to finish the ones you had already picked.

You ended up staying at the library to read the books instead of going home. It would be more likely to finish a good amount of them there than at home, where you would get distracted.

There weren't many people in there; you could only see an older lady with short, curly black hair and a round face. Two boys, reading some history book that you guessed was for a school assignment, and an older man He's not that old; he could probably be in his late twenties.

He seemed bored, as he was eyeing some books and closing them after a few seconds. He was surrounded by a bunch of fantasy books.

He had short black hair and a prominent nose. His lips were full and red, and he had fair skin.

He was attractive.

His eyes lifted from the fifth book in a row that you had seen picked up and drop it. He looked in your direction, and he didn't seem surprised to have your attention.

You quickly went back to read. Trying to calm down your heart from the embarrassment, you were reading... Words. Did you remember a single thing that you had read so far? No, not at all.

You glanced at him secretly, but he was already looking at you.

You frowned, getting even more embarrassed for getting caught.

You turned around, deciding that it would be for the best to go and finish the rest at home that night. Your eyes were going through the words, but you were not capturing any single word.

A hand suddenly grabbed your wrist, holding you in place. He was really strong, and you were sure there would be red marks as soon as he let you go.

"But look what we got here, hello." He spoke to you. His voice was deep—deeper than anything you've ever heard. His dark, hypnotic eyes bore into yours, causing a dizzying effect that left you momentarily disoriented. "You're quite a sight, aren't you? It's no wonder you caught Jeonghan's attention.

Sweat formed on your palms as you struggled to maintain your composure, meeting his gaze with a mixture of defiance and trepidation. "I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean."

You couldn't ignore the unease that emanated from him, a sense of power and dominance that made your skin crawl. Despite your best efforts to break free, his grip tightened, conveying a warning to comply.

"Listen carefully; this is your only warning," he hissed, his voice laced with a sinister edge. "I don't know what Jeonghan has shared with you or the nature of your relationship, but it ends now. Should you continue, your brother will suffer the consequences."

A surge of fear coursed through your body as Seungcheol's piercing gaze locked onto you. The room grew colder, and you could sense the darkness lurking within his eyes. Every word he uttered dripped with malice, leaving no doubt in your mind that he meant every threat he made.

Seungcheol's words hung heavy in the air, suffocating you with their implications. The world stopped for a second. You felt frozen in time as the rest of the people continued with what they were doing. Someone was mumbling something. Panic welled up inside you, but you fought to maintain a facade of composure, not wanting to show him any sign of weakness.

He was just a big, mean boy, and you were sick of them.

"I don't understand why you're doing this," you stammered, your voice barely above a whisper. You hated the way it broke at the end. "What has my brother done to deserve this?"

A menacing smile played on Seungcheol's lips as he tightened his grip. You hated the way his hold was almost breaking your wrist, and yet he seemed so calm, like he was barely touching something. He chuckled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "You think I care about your brother? It's you that Jeonghan has taken a liking to, and that poses a threat to us. We cannot allow a mere little girl to disrupt our order."

You frowned, the fear leaving your body for a brief moment. "I'm not a little girl."

Who did he think he was? Coming to your favorite place, trying to intimidate you and the well-being of my brother.

"Oh, trust me, you are." He replied seriously. "And I don't think you or he understand it yet."

The librarian rushed to the guys reading, shushing them as they had been elevating their voices more and more.

You looked at her, panicking and trying to ask for help. He seemed calm; if it weren't for the grip on your wrist tightening further, you would even think he was enjoying his time.

The woman walked back to her reading, not paying any attention to you.

"You underestimate the consequences of your actions," he warned, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "If you continue this path, you will bring nothing but pain and suffering to yourself and those you hold dear."

"You might think I'm saying this just because, but trust me. It is for your own good."

With those last words, the man stood up from the seat next to you, disappearing into the depths of the library. He left you alone with a mixture of emotions. Were you scared? Yes.  Were you furious because of what he implied? Absolutely.

You quickly gather your books, not wanting to stay there any longer in case that man decides to come back, and God knows what he could do to you.

"You're leaving already, love?" The older woman asked you. The only response she got was a nod of the head, smiling nervously.

You walked as quickly as your legs could, holding the books close to your chest as you constantly looked over your shoulder. There was this weird feeling that someone was following you.

There was a point where your body just started running, wanting to reach the safety of your house.

The only thing you were hoping for was for your brother to be home.

You couldn't help but wonder if Jeonghan's growing friendship was worth the fear of something happening to your brother.

You stormed into your house, closing the door behind your back and locking it as your head thought of ten different ways that a man could enter your house and hurt you.

"Luke?" You called your brother, dropping the books on the table. "Luke, are you home?"

His bedroom was empty, his bed still a mess. There was not trace of him in the bathroom or in your room.

You checked if the door was fully locked and closed the curtains, attempting to create a barrier between yourself and the outside world.

You weren't hungry, but you found your body shaking nonstop, so you decided to prepare some tea to calm down.

Just as you were pouring the hot water into your favorite mug, a sudden knock on the door shattered the fragile calm that you had managed to create for a few moments.

Your heart dropped to your stomach, and a jolt of terror shot through your veins. The unexpected visit made your mind think of the possibilities of it being the man from the library who finished his threat.

With trembling legs, you cautiously approached the door. Could it be the man at the library? Or perhaps another friend of Jeinghan that he had mentioned before told you to take care of what the other one warned you about?

Taking a deep breath, you gathered all your courage and opened the door, only to find yourself face-to-face with Jeonghan.

For a brief second, you felt a wave of relief wash over you. Jeonghan's familiar face and gentle smile greeted you. As he took notice of the terror on your face, his smile dropped. "What happened?"

"You almost scared me to death! What are you doing here?"

Jeonghan's eyes wandered around your face. "I told you I was coming to see you, remember?"

You remain silent, trying to gather your emotions and thoughts together.

"May I come in?" He asked, looking quite worried.

Almost as an instinct, your eyes went to the forest behind him.

Jeonghan looked at you confusedly, following where you were looking.

"It's just me." Jeonghan mumbled, looking back at you.

"You sure?"

You wanted to trust his words, especially since he looked so calm. But you simply couldn't shake off the uneasiness that gnawed at the pit of your stomach. The shadows cast by the trees danced ominously, triggering a sense of foreboding within you.

Jeonghan's brows furrowed as he tried to make your uneasiness dissapear. "I assure you, there's nothing to worry about. It's just the two of us here."

"I just came down there and there's no one; I think I saw Jiji running behind some birds, as well." He added, seeing that you were still not sure.

You nodded, not because you fully trusted his words but because you wanted to find solace in his presence. But the lingering fear clung to you like a suffocating shroud.

You glanced one last time into the forest; you couldn't see anybody, and deep down, you really wanted to think it was your anxiety speaking instead of the rational part of your brain.

Having Jeonghan inside the house made you feel safer. That was something you yearned for—a sign of safety, a validation that you weren't alone in this mess.

You moved to the side, opening the door a little bit more so the man in front of you could enter the house.

Jeonghan moved around the house like he owned it.

The man walked to the mess you had made when his knock on the door scared you, kneeling down to clean the broken pieces of the mug and throwing them in the trash.

"You don't have to." You moved closer to stop him, feeling tired all of a sudden.

"It's okay." He reassured. "It's all done now." He replied with a small smile.

You dropped your arms to both sides of your body, standing there without moving at all. Your eyes couldn't meet his.

Now that both of you were inside, you felt better. All the courts were closed, and there was no way for someone to know he was inside.

But still—

Jeonghan's gaze lingered on your face, his eyes tracing the lines of worry etched into your features. He noticed the way your hands trembled slightly, as if an invisible weight bore down on you, threatening to crush your spirit.

Concern etched itself across Jeonghan's face, his brows furrowing. He couldn't quite put his finger on the cause of your distress.

"What happened, (y/n)?" Jeonghan asked softly, his voice laced with genuine concern. "You seem different from the last time I saw you, as if something has unsettled you deeply."

"I don't think you should be here." You confessed, feeling Jeonghan's sudden approximation overwhelming.

Jeonghan's hands were at both sides of your face, holding softly your cheeks and lifting your head so you would be looking straight into his.

He mumbled something, but you couldn't really put into words what he said.

Instead, you felt every single thought of yours escape your mouth as if you were throwing them up.

"One of your friends told me if I kept meeting with you, he would hurt my brother. And I'm so sorry, Jeonghan. I'm really sorry. But I cannot risk losing my brother; he's my only family left."

"And it sucks, because I enjoy having you around. But I really cannot—"

"It's okay," Jeonghan sighed, caressing your cheeks to calm you down. "You have nothing to be sorry for."

Jeonghan put on a mask, trying to hide his own emotions behind an expressionless face as he watched the fear and uncertainty in your eyes.

He understood the gravity of the situation; they had told him in advance how much they did not like Jeonghan to interact with you, and he himself had confessed it to you. But he never thought they would take it as far as threatening you directly.

He felt extremely guilty, as he took the blame on himself. And this feeling only made him develop this instinct to protect you. And that meant removing himself from the equation and sparing you any further harm.

It sounded so easy; he just had to close this chapter of his life, turn around, and pretend you did not exist. But the thought of leaving you alone, this vulnerable to whatever darkness may come, pained him deeply. He couldn't do it. Not when it was his fault.

Leaving you alone wouldn't resolve anything.

And yet, staying next to you wouldn't help it either.

"I should go," Jeonghan murmured, his voice laced with a mixture of resignation and concern. "I don't want to put you in any more danger than you and your brother already are."

Your heart raced at the thought of Jeonghan leaving you behind. You couldn't be alone. Not now.

If you were by yourself when it was that dark outside, it made you easy to pray. You were defenseless, especially with the uncertainty surrounding your brother's return.

"No, please, don't leave," you pleaded. "I... I can't do this alone. I'm scared, Jeonghan."

His eyes softened, mirroring the vulnerability in your voice. "Alright, I'll stay," he said, his voice filled with determination. "At least until your brother comes back home."

"He..." You started without knowing how to ask for more.

"I'll make sure he doesn't see me when I leave." Jeonghan promised, realizing what you tried to say.

A sense of relief washed over you, knowing that Jeonghan would stand by your side for as long as he could.

"Thank you." You mumbled, noticing that you were holding Jeonghan's shirt so tight that your knuckles were turning white.

As the night wore on and the darkness outside deepened, you found yourself seeking comfort in a bedtime story. You looked at Jeonghan with a glimmer of hope in your eyes.

"Would you read me a book?" You asked hesitantly. "Just until I fall asleep."

A flicker of vulnerability crossed Jeonghan's face, his eyes widening ever so slightly. His eyes moved away from your face. "I don't know how to read (y/n); I'm sorry," he admitted, his voice tinged with a mix of embarrassment and sadness.

A gentle smile graced your lips as you reached out to grasp his hand. "Then, let me read to you," you whispered.

You didn't comment on his not knowing how to read as you reached for some of your books. His eyes never left the ground, as if he were aware of something for which he was at fault.

"I haven't read for anybody before," you confessed, returning to bed and opening the book so both of you could see the drawings in the pages. "But I'll try my best."

Jeonghan listened patiently as you read word by word, enjoying seeing every single drawing whenever a new page surprised you both with one.

You felt yourself growing more sleepy, but you were forcing yourself to stay awake to finish the story for Jeonghan.

Your battle with yourself eventually came to an end when sleep washed you over, the book falling on your lap as your head rested on Jeonghan's cold shoulder.

You were deep in sleep, but Jeonghan made a promise to both of you.

"I won't let anybody harm you or your family," Jeonghan vowed. "I will protect you with everything that I am."
