Tw: slight gore!
Garlic.
Wasn't that what was supposed to keep vampires away?
They used to braid garlic into wreaths and hang them from their front doors to ward the evil creatures of the night away, didn't they?
You had lived by this logic, unsure as to how exactly it worked, but you'd never had an issue thanks to it.
Or was it perhaps thanks to the fact that these were mythical creatures? A child's worst nightmare? A rumor spread in the olden days to explain why the hair and nails of the dead continued to grow post mortem?
Well, it worked out that garlic had a ton of health benefits as well, meaning you weren't exactly pained to incorporate it into your diet and your life just to be safe.
Watching a pool of red collect on the floor beside you and the man latched to your neck, staining his skin and your own, you cursed whoever had kept a certain side effect of garlic from you.
Garlic was a fantastic aromatic. It helped to flavor soups, stews, breads. It was said to keep away creatures that lurked in the shadows as well as unwanted strangers if you happened to forget to brush your teeth after consuming it.
What they conveniently forgot to tell you was that garlic was a blood thinner as well.
