“Вы по своим стреляли. По дезертирам, прямо во время боя.” [You people shot your own. Deserters, right in the middle of battle.] A different man would’ve grown indignant. Embarrassed, maybe. Shameful, conflicted, anything. The Russian doesn’t blink. That’s a yes. “А ты стрелял?” [Have you?] Ogata nudges with the rifle hard enough to force a squint. Completely unnecessary. The corners of his lips twitch back into the facsimile of a grin.
Barrier troops, that's the name for it. In the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian army formed detachments of snipers to shoot anyone who ran off the battlefield. Sniping their own is something Ogata and Vasya have in common.

Ever since then, there's a bite in your jaw that doesn't heal; for ages, you've been scratching it into nothing with a frightening mania. Ten years ago, the only thing that could’ve ended it lay faceless at your feet. It's been too long. His features have mostly vanished from your memory. You still try to draw him sometimes. “And you can't even draw here.” What do you want from me? “Nothing. I'd like my eye back, though, but I don't think that's happening.”
It's 1917 — the start of the Russian Civil War, and ten years after Ogata's passing. A catpured Vasya reminisces at the end of his road.
