We had one of those when I was a kid. That device with the cable is the remote. We even had a video camera to go with it ... which meant I got to carry that heavy recorder while mom used the camera. It was technically portable, but it really helped to have a strong teen to carry the heavy part.
Yeah, it's really primitive by today's standards, but it was kind of a tech marvel in its day. No nostalgia at all, though. I'll take the camera in my phone any day over that thing!

What about if I still have my VCR and VHS tapes?

I want to say that technically speaking anyone can know what a VCR is regardless of age, since well they aren’t usually sold anymore in stores and VHS‘s aren’t usually sold, they still exist and someone’s parents and/or grandparents probably would still have them and show them stuff on it, or they could have found out through the internet.
But then I remember that this is talking about people who were alive when VHS tapes and VCRs were still commonly sold and used, or when the transition to DVDs was happening and their parents and/or grandparents still had and used them.
I was born in 2003 and I’m not sure when VCRs became out of date but I remember I used to watch stuff on my grandparents VCR including the 1970s Lorax TV special I had on VHS
Also shout out to my nan for taping poko for me, and having taped the smurfs too, those were a fun watch
