Nostalgia Factor: "Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped"
Here's another game that scared me a lot as a kid. Unlike "Banjo-Kazooie", though, I still insisted on playing this one. I'm not quite sure what that says about me or the game, but the game is extremely good either way. You play as Crash and Coco Bandicoot as they try to keep Dr. Cortex from taking over the world through time travel. This involves going to different time periods and collecting gems and crystals from them. There are two major reasons to play this game. First of all, it's funny. The villains' banter is great and some of the death animations for Crash kind of make you want to kill him just to see what happens. The second reason is that the gameplay is amazing. It's so much fun just running around and spinning into things. The levels may be somewhat linear, but the time travel premise allows for a lot of variety. As for what scared me about this game, it came in the fourth world. As you start every new world, the villain of that time period comes out to taunt you as you enter certain levels. In the first world, the villain was Dr. N. Gin. For those who aren't familiar with the character, he's a short mad scientist who has an undetonated missile lodged in the right side of his head. In a weird way, the missile seems to have melded with that side of his face, so half of his face is metallic while the other half is normal. This gives him a rather grotesque and unsettling look. That, combined with his accent, scared me so much that I ran out of my room as soon as he showed up onscreen. Since then, however, I've come to love Dr. N. Gin, and he's become one of my favorite characters in the Crash universe. I heartily recommend this game. There's so much to do, and so many secrets to find. So many, in fact, that I finished the game with 104% completion, and I loved every second of it.
