The Sufferer and Bringer of Pain

Pain. It was the first thing he ever knew. His first impression of this damning world. His tormentor and ally, the one thing that he knew would never leave him. Pain. That was the name he gave himself. But to humanity, he was known as Gojira. The monster that gave the world the same pain he felt. And he felt a lot of pain.

----

His whole body burned with the fury of hell itself. He collapsed, screaming and writhing in agony. His eyes dry, his scales scorched, his muscles tender, his breathing labored and the smell of the air stinging his nostrils. With clenched teeth, he pried his eyes open. The ground was black and lifeless, the sky covered by dark smoke. He shut his eyes when the stinging became unbearable. He needed to escape the pain. He forced his weakened arms to move. He began dragging his body aimlessly, desperately trying to escape this waking nightmare.

After an eternity, his nostrils fell into water. It was cool and soothing, he crawled further into the depths, the currents massaging his sore body. Although he couldn't breathe and the pain still lingered, he felt oddly at peace. That was until his lungs couldn't wait a moment longer for air and he risked inhaling. Water plunged into his nostrils, filling his lungs. His eyes shot open and he flailed his limbs in an effort to swim up. He breached the surface violently, coughing up water and taking in precious air.

Once the pain in his lungs and nostrils lessened, he noticed his surroundings. He was in a large body of water, the only land in sight was surrounded by smoke and burning scents. That must have been where he had awoken. Further up, the smoke formed a mushroom shape that seemed to be expanding. He huffed, the smoke burned and he did not wish to be there when it expanded to where he was. He turned away from the land and began swimming. His species weren't meant to swim, but he found kicking the water with his legs sufficed. With his head bobbing just above the surface, he began his journey in this new terrain.

----

His legs were tiring from the endless swimming. He was starting to fear he'd exhaust himself and sink into the depths to either drown or be snatched by a large beast. The sun had gone, leaving him with only the soft moonlight to see with. Just as his head began to lull into the water, he spotted something from the corner of his vision. It was warm light, fire perhaps. Fire meant land and so he changed course towards the tiny lights.

Getting closer to the land, he welcomed the feeling of ground beneath his feet. Although his legs wobbled as he waded towards the shore and his drying scales were met with the return of the burning pain. Still, he was hungry and exhausted. It would take more than pain and weakness to stop him from seeking his needs.

Now on land, he saw more lights which were even smaller than he expected. Coming closer, he noticed they came from strange rocks. He sniffed at the nearest one, its scent was weirder than its appearance. He huffed and moved further into the assembly of glowing rocks. One of his steps was met with a loud noise and a warm sensation at his foot. He looked down to see that he stepped on something. It might have been one of the rocks, smoke and fire now took its place. He tilted his head curiously, the fire did not hurt.

As he bent to observe the destruction, he heard a sharp noise. He turned his head to face a small screaming creature. He had never seen one like it before. He moved his head closer, it began running away. He snapped his jaws but missed it as it ran behind a rock.

He followed it, turning the corner to see more of the small creatures. At the sight of him, they screamed and ran away. The sight exciting his predatory instincts, he bellowed a hunting cry. But what came out of him was not his roar. Startled, he cut his cry short. The sound riled the little ones and their commotion increased. He marched onward, although they were too small to his liking, there may have been enough of them to ease his hunger. He leaned down to snatch some. But was startled by his claws dragging on the ground. He knew his arms weren't that long. He jolted to his full height, analyzing his body for the first time.

What he saw was not his body. His scales were ashy black and jagged like magma rock. His pecks were enlarged. His arms were elongated. His wrists twisted unnaturally. His claws had an extra digit. He felt like puking, his body was beyond deformed.

His horror was cut short as something knocked him in the chest. He cried out in shock, hearing the strange voice coming out of him once more. He was hit again, this time he saw what hit him, some sort of fire ball. Another one hit him, this time he saw where it came from. Little flying things were circling him and throwing these projectiles at him. He didn't understand any of it. He was in a strange world with strange creatures in a strange body. He felt like weeping. He wanted it all to stop. His back began to warm. He opened his jaws, feeling something about to come out.

Fire shot out of his mouth, destroying everything in its path. The power jerked his head back, but he quickly adjusted. Realizing the beam was draining his energy, he decided to work with it. He aimed it at the flying creatures, finding satisfaction in the way they exploded into flames. Once the sky was rid of them, he aimed his beam at the rocks surrounding him. They too violently burst to flames. Once he was spent, the beam dissipated. He panted, looking at the destruction surrounding him. Although he had used all his energy to bring about such destruction, he found satisfaction in it. For the first time since he'd awoken in this hell, he felt powerful. He stomped and flung his head towards the heavens, releasing a victory cry in his new voice. He was Pain, the sufferer and the bringer.
