sorry if someone has already asked this, but do you have any advice on starting aus?

ok! so.

making an au that really feels like Your Own means you do a lot of original designs! don’t be afraid to get weird, get wild, get CRAZY

generally there’s like, 3 categories i divide aus into

1. crossover aus- imagining a series combined w another, whether that be “hlvrai but it’s set in the half life universe” or “hlvrai but they’re in splatoon 2” , for these feel free to diverge from the canon story! you *can* make it so that every character is pretty concrete in their role but like, putting benrey in tartar’s role in a splatoon au would SURELY change his evil plan somewhat

2. theme-based aus- aus where there’s a change in the characters and environment based on a central theme. my example is y2kvr! the theme being the old internet! but other themes can be hlvrai cowboy au, space au, whatever- pick a theme and go nuts! decide how it affects the plot, if at all

3. story-based aus- aus where all the changes branch out from a change in the plot- ie questions like “what if the player was an asshole?” “what if the player was stuck in the game?” “what if bubby never agreed to the betrayal?” stuff like that- basically anything that plays with hlvrai’s canon story and changes it around without major aesthetic changes

so i guess in general, have fun, throw everything at the wall n see what sticks! :)
