It was only logical to send you in first. Shibuya was obviously a trap, and one of your cursed techniques allowed you to alter your appearance to look like others. So naturally as the second strongest sorcerer who could impersonate the strongest, you were sent in to evaluate the situation.
That didn’t mean that Gojo liked it. He knew you were strong, but something about this situation made him uneasy. You had laughed, reassuring him that he was always uneasy when the two of you were separated. And while he supposed that was true, that didn’t make his separation anxiety unfounded.
Especially because much more than the agreed upon thirty minutes had already passed. And still, there was no sign of you. Turning to Yaga he opened his mouth.
“Go.”
Yaga sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“I know there’s no stopping you. Just…be careful. Please. Just use your brain for once in your life.”
But Gojo was already gone, teleported off to Shibuya. It was child’s play for him to deal with the transfigured humans that Mahito had left scattered in his path so it was mere minutes before he entered the underground station.
He frantically searched for you, yet he couldn’t sense your cursed energy. Desperation took over, and logic and caution fell to the wayside. He was careless, destroying every curse in his path until he came across a strange cube.
A prison realm. Realizing what it was, he turned and was about to leave the area when something was tossed from behind him, landing with a grotesque splat before him.
It was a finger, but why…
His world stopped. He couldn’t breathe. Because that finger, that ring finger, had two very familiar rings on it.
The one with the gorgeous alexandrite stone set in rose gold was the engagement ring that he so painstakingly selected for you.
The other was a simple gold band. Its twin currently rested on his own ring finger.
It couldn’t be. His chest felt tight and his vision blurred. What was that finger doing detached from your body? You were fine though. It was just a finger. Shoko could reattach it.
Gently removing the rings from the finger, he pocketed them and turned to confront whoever it was that had tossed it.
He blinked. Once. Twice.
This couldn’t be happening. This was all a dream. He was going to wake up in your shared bed with you in his arms. Safe. Alive. Well.
Uncontrollable hysteria bubbled in him, denial already setting in.
Because really, there was no possible way that his first love was proudly holding up the mangled corpse of the last person he would ever love.
Your limp hand dangled towards the ground, your elbow twisted at an unnatural angle, but all he could focus on was the bloody stub where your left ring finger used to be.
Slowly his eyes trailed upwards, running over your broken and bruised form.
When he finally met your eyes, your dull and lifeless eyes, he began to disassociate from reality.
He had held it together for so long, but seeing the spark absent from your beautiful eyes, replaced instead by a cloudy film was too much for him.
He stood there dumbly, unable to think, feel, or do anything.
He just felt…empty.
The prison realm swallowed him whole, but he found himself unable to care.
The only thing occupying his head was the cruel irony of it all.
His first love had killed his last.

Before, his head had been so loud. Loud with frustrations. Loud with jokes. Loud with insecurities and words unsaid.
Then he met you. You, who was immune to his cursed speech. Suddenly, his mind was quiet, and his world was filled with bright, beautiful sound. He could laugh with you after he shared yet another cheesy joke. He could comfort you with his words when you cried. He could finally tell someone about how he was insecure about not being good enough. That he would never amount to anything because his cursed technique hurt himself more than it helped others.
And you listened. Soon, the two of you stayed up late night after night laughing, trolling people on the internet, discussing and doing anything and everything.
Slowly, Inumaki fell in love with you.
And he was lucky enough to have you love him in return. So the two of you began dating, and he had never been happier. You were his first love, his best friend, the person he wanted to marry, and his other half.
You were his person. And he was yours.
So why? Why was this happening?
You had noticed the immeasurable spike in cursed energy a split second before he had and reacted just as quickly. Shoving him out of range of the attack, the two of you locked eyes and you smiled at him.
Then the attack hit.
Reaching out to you, his fingertips had barely brushed yours before his left arm was reduced to little more than bloody mist. And you-you-
You were gone. Nothing more than a spray of blood, disintegrated bone and tissue covering his front.
He collapsed to his knees, stunned.
Quiet. It was so quiet.
Later when help finally arrived and someone found him, they found him kneeling in a puddle of blood and shredded fabric.
When they tapped his shoulder he didn’t respond, just blankly murmuring your name. Over and over again.
The quiet. Maybe if he filled it with the sound of your name, you would return and fill the air with your beautiful laughter.
That’s right.
When you got back, you would make it all better.
You would take the quiet away.

There have only been three times that Nanami Kento has truly not been in control of his emotions. The first took place when he was in high school, and his best friend died before his eyes. The second took place mere hours ago, when he found Ijichi’s crumpled body on the ground. And the third?
Well the third was right now.
Right now as he knelt over your charred body, ignoring his own severe injuries. Just how cruel could fate be, making him watch as his beloved was incinerated before him because he wasn’t fast enough?
In disbelief he reached out and touched your cheek. Your skin made a dull crackling sound and stuck to his fingers when he pulled them away. You didn’t move. You didn’t breathe. He leaned down and pressed his ear to your chest, searching for a heartbeat.
In that vast and terrible silence, his imagination began to fill it with the steady thump of your heartbeat, the reassuring whoosh of air entering and leaving your lungs. Because you couldn’t be dead. He simply couldn’t comprehend it. He had bought that diamond ring for you mere days ago. You hadn’t worn it yet. He had awoken this morning to your warm body in his arms. He couldn’t accept a world where you wouldn’t be back in his arms at the end of the day.
Eventually the imaginary sound of your breathing was replaced by the sound of waves lapping on a beach, and his last thread of sanity snapped.
Of course none of this was happening. He merely had a bad dream while napping on the beach. The two of you had honeymooned in Malaysia. You were waiting for him in the beachfront hut the two of you had purchased. All he had to do was travel this last stretch of beach and he’d be back with you forever.
Staggering to his feet he began the long trek back to you, stumbling and twirling in an elaborate and deadly dance as he went. Unaware of anything happening in the real world, his body functioned on autopilot. Unrelenting in his determination to reach you, he ignored reality until finally, finally, he was so close to reaching you. But something stopped him and drew him back into the real world momentarily.
“N-Nanamin?”
A quiet broken voice broke his trance. Blankly, he stared at the teenage boy who had spoken. The boy seemed familiar…right. His name was Itadori. Itadori took another shaky step forward.
“Nanamin?”
Suddenly everything came crashing back onto Nanami. Looking away, he closed his eyes, willing all the memories away and waiting to be reunited with you. Exhaling deeply, he relaxed, preparing to be at peace, but a pair of familiar hands cupped his cheeks.
His eyes snapped open, and once more he found himself gazing into your beautiful ones.
Breathing your name, he reached out and attempted to touch your face, but you stepped back before his fingers brushed your smooth, unmarred cheek.
“My love.”
You gazed at him with such love, Nanami felt a great gaping pit in his chest.
“You’re not done yet. Help our Itadori one more time.”
Nanami’s eyes widened and you smiled sweetly at him.
“You’ve got this.”
From behind you, Haibara shot him a thumbs up. As the two of you began to disappear Nanami’s best friend called out to him.
“We’ll be waiting for you!
Taking a deep breath, Nanami turned slowly and offered Itadori Yuji some final words of encouragement.
“Itadori.”
He rasped with a comforting smile, gazing upon the boy he cherished like his own son.
“I’ll leave the rest to you.”
And with those words, he departed to join you and Haibara on an eternal vacation.
