it's entirely a disservice to make it out to be that falsettos is just about "gay people in messy relationship"
it's also about trina feeling trapped in a role and a life that society has assigned to her, that life then promptly falling apart. gaining more agency, and yet still she has to deal with men who are struggling to grow up. then again it's all torn down!
it's also about how marvin feels entitled to always be in control. how that mentality hurts his loved ones and then hurts him, how he learns to look outside of himself and give back, be vulnerable.
it's about questioning the traditional dynamics of what a family is supposed to be, because only if they all put their heads together will they help jason grow up properly. "it takes a village", and all that.
and it's about family again because even if it's clear that whizzer is going to die, his time alive still matters, he is survived by the people who loved him and the time they spent with him!
it's also about the terror of knowing what's coming and not being able to stop it. charlotte goes from having no one dying on her shift, to dealing with a wave of something terrifying that she can't stop, even though she cares and she tries so much.
i'm sure there is a lot more to be added here & it's also always worth discussing how well the musical approaches any of the given themes, but yeah. basically it's complicated!
