Status: closed for @aidenjcarter Location: Aiden’s house  Time & Date: January 2nd, early evening

After fielding a dozen of calls from Priscilla after first rolling into town a few days before Christmas, Jameson had promised not to approach his half-brother until after the holidays. He didn’t know why the fuck it matter, but after a little bit of thinking, her idea made sense. This was quite a bombshell to drop on someone. Hell, he’d barely wrapped his head around it at all, but the moment the holidays ended - finally - Jaime was checking the file from the PI to look up his address again.

In the car before heading up to the house, Jaime looked at the high school graduation photo attached with the file. He didn’t… look like someone Jaime would’ve ever known. Before putting more thought towards it, Jaime hopped out of his beat up Chevy and marched up to the door, knocking rapidly. He pushed back his long, dark waves and waited.

“Hi!” Jaime greeted with an unsure smile. He very rarely felt out of place, but this? This was surreal. “You’re - Holy shit. You’re actually Aiden. That’s fucking awesome, man. I’m Jaime.”

Aiden was surprised he recovered so quickly from his annual New Year hangover. Maybe he was finally making smarter decisions by keeping himself hydrated throughout the night. The past year had been looking up for Aiden, he met someone that really complemented him, he got his best friend back, and on top of that, he made more friends. He finally felt like he had a family after so many years.

Gathering up the rest of his students’ papers, Aiden opened up his laptop and began entering his grades. Aiden usually had headphones on to keep away all the outside noise. He needed to get the grades entered before he got yelled at by his superior. Through all the noise canceling technology, which seemed to have failed Aiden this one time, Aiden heard a slight faint of what he recognized as a knock on his apartment door.

Aiden wasn’t expecting anyone and the last person who surprised him like this was Emmy. He would’ve been happy to see her and so with a smile on his face, he opened the door, only to be met by someone who wasn’t his friend. “Uh - yes, I’m Aiden,” he quickly replied, kind of creeped out by the other standing outside his front door. Aiden quickly walked outside and closed his door. “Are you some guy trying to sell me a magazine or something?” completely ignoring that the other hand introduced himself.

It took Abby a few moments to connect the dots of the situation. Aiden wasn’t there to see her, why would he be when she didn’t even tell him she was going to be here today. “Old…old college friends,” she repeated, glancing between the two of them. Immediately, her hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide. Oh fuck. She had never put the two and two together. And why would she? Even when she told Aiden about her previous relationship history (if her thing with Gray could even be called a relationship), it’s not like she told Aiden Gray’s name. It’s not like she knew that they were old friends. It’s not like Gray knew she was seeing Aiden, it’s not like she knew Aiden and Gray were friends. She shook her head, backing up as she put her hand down. “That’s…really great. Uhm…I’m just gonna go…crawl out of a bathroom window.” She took off down the hallway, knowing that in fact there was no window in the bathroom but figured it would be a good place to hide anyway. She opened the door, shutting it behind her and locking it as she took a few, shuddering breaths. This was fine. Totally fine that her current something and her ex something were really good friends. Maybe they’ve talked about her. Whatever. It was totally fine. @grayfischer

Grayson remained quiet, mostly, during the exchange between Aiden and Abby. He’d seen her pale, scurrying off, leaving him feeling beyond uncomfortable and looking at Aiden with bewilderment. As Abby disappeared down the hall, Gray cursed mentally — she certainly didn’t make things look any better. He couldn’t help but remember how Aiden had talked about her, and…. the last thing he ever wanted to do was get in the way of this. Not for them.

Besides, it wasn’t really his place to tell Aiden what has happened, right? That was Abby’s news. He didn’t have to say anything, although, Aiden’s totally confused expression right then made Gray wonder if he’d connected the dots already. It was unlikely. Aiden knew how weird Grayson was about sex, right? “Abby is a newer friend. We met last year, ‘cause of the whole nerds unite thing,” Grayson offered up in explanation, being truthful. They’d been just friends for 99% of their time knowing each other. Just that one confusing moment before he left… which had been nothing, probably. “I didn’t tell her when I left, either, so I think she’s still upset with me. I didn’t know she was your girl, but you know, I totally see it now. It’s, like, a perfect match.”

Aiden watched as Abby ran to the bathroom. Of course, everything in him wanted to chase after her. He was curious as to why she reacted the way she did. It shouldn’t have been so weird that the three of them had known about each other. He didn’t question it. Aiden kept his eye towards the hallway just in case he saw Abby peeping out again. He let out a deep sigh, wondering if he had done something to mess up this whole thing with Abby or something.

“Oh, that’s probably why I never knew the two of you knew each other. I mean you and I were already drifted apart by then. I met her one time when I went in to speak to an old professor but we only started becoming friends when we sat together at a coffee shop and things kind of progressed from there.” He sighed, hearing that Abby was also abandoned by Gray. His heart felt for her. “Is she - is she the girl that you did the thingy with and then just left?” Aiden recalled an old conversation that the two shared. “We’re dating. I haven’t asked her to be my girlfriend yet. Thanks though. I think she complements me really well.” @abbyrchrds

Aiden isn’t the first person – nor will he be the last, if Winnie’s dismal track record is anything to go by – to call him weird. He’s decided to wear it as a badge of honour, irrespective of whether it’s intended in glowing terms. If he didn’t, if he let himself be affected by it, God knows where he’d be. Weird is fine. He can live with weird. “He can’t lock me out. I live here. Like, I signed papers and everything like a proper adult, so Gray can suck on that.” He didn’t just sign the papers. He also doodled over them, but it seems needless to mention it. “That’s exactly what I’m saying! An angel. My hero. I could kiss you.” He gathers up more tinsel in his arms, spreading it out over Gray’s windowsill and pulling a face at how dusty the surface is. “Hey, has your boyfriend ever heard of cleaning? This is obscene. Marie Kondo would be quaking.”

“Well, he could easily lock me out. We need to make a deal here. If Grayson asks, I had nothing to do with this and you just happened to hire some random construction worker from Craigslist to help you with all the small people stuff, deal?” Honestly, Aiden didn’t care if Winnie told Gray that Aiden was the one who made Christmas vomit all over his room, but he figured it’d be safe to just not let Gray know what’s been going on in the room. “I think we can do without the kissing. A fist bump is chill though,” he nodded. “Woah - Gray isn’t my boyfriend. I don’t know where you get that idea from,” Aiden laughed. It wasn’t the first time he’s heard this before. Rey had shipped the two since the beginning of time. “I think you should clean up for him so that he won’t be so upset that you threw up Christmas in his room.”

Abby sent a panicked look back at Grayson. What do you expect me to do! It said. Thankfully, she had never mentioned Grayson by name when she told Aiden about her very brief relationship history, but it probably wouldn’t take long for him to put the two and two together, if his question was any indication. When Abby finally felt she had been caught, she stopped moving, gently folding her hands and holding them down in front of her. “I think it’s great that we’re all friends already, it makes it far easier to divide the time between the two of you.” When it came down to it, she really didn’t want to have to choose. “No, Aiden, sit.” Abby gestured to the couch. “My extra joy cons are in my bag, and I can go get more snacks.” She looked over at Gray. “You still have my stash of cheddar and sour cream ruffles, right?” @grayfischer

With three people living in the house, there were plenty of controllers sitting around, and Abby’s suggestion to get more helped, too. Gray felt his heart resume at a normal rate, and his jaw unclenched. Maybe this was fine. Yeah, this was fine. With a smile, Gray moved to return to the couch, grabbing Aiden’s sleeve and giving it a tug to go with him. “Dude, stay, it’s not even a big deal. It’s not weird at all,” Gray promised, plopping down and shooting another smile to Abby. “Yep, top shelf so you might have to get up on the counter. Uh, didn’t want Winnie finding them,” Gray explained, grabbing extra joycons on the table to pass to Aiden. With Abby out of the room once more, Gray tried not to feel awkward, and decided to just reiterate one more time: “It’s awesome, dude. Like you two are just really great.” @aidenjcarter

“Okay, as long as I’m not intruding,” Aiden agreed to stay. This situation seemed perfect in his eyes, his best friend and one of the most important people in his life were already friends. Aiden felt like the transition of his life was going smoother than he thought it would. Life was working out great for him. “Thank you, I really appreciate it. It’s such a small world how the two of you know each other too,” Aiden smiled at his friend. “I’m really glad that you two already know each other. It makes it easier for me to trickle Abby into the other aspects of my life,” Aiden leaned in closer to Grayson, slightly whispering in hopes that Abby wouldn’t hear them from the kitchen. “I was thinking of asking her to be my girlfriend before February but I’m not sure of how it’ll go or if she’ll reject me or something.” @abbyrchrds

Pretty much every single thing about Aiden’s body language was screaming that he was not exactly up for company. And in her ever-tactful way, Emmy decided to ignore all of it. She strode inside without another word. Although– “Wait, you don’t know who Meg Ryan is? Seriously? It’s a good thing I’m here then.”

Honestly, she wasn’t sure why she’d sought him out in this situation. And to be completly honest, there wasn’t even really a situation. Maybe it was because Grayson seemed to be so fond of him and she trusted Gray more than she trusted herself most days. Mostly it was because she wanted someone far enough removed from the situation should it happen to come up. Because it was probably going to come up.

She gave Aiden a once-over and cocked her head. “I hope you know you don’t have to get all dressed up for me, Aiden. We’re friends. I appreciate the effort, though.”

“I’m really sorry to disappoint. To be honest, I don’t watch a lot of movies so I assume that’s what she’s mainly known for. I also am really terrible with names and faces. I’m honestly surprised I remember yours, Em,” he joked around. “Last time I watched movies with someone, I ran out, so hopefully that doesn’t happen this time,” Aiden thought back to the second time he and Abby had hung out.

“So, why did you decide to come here?” Aiden questioned, hoping that the question didn’t come off as offensive. “I mean not that I don’t want you here, but I figured other people might have also been up for some Meg Ryan,” he chuckled.

“Okay, good, because honestly, I live in sweatpants. It’s so nice to not have to dress up and feel like I’m going to work or something. Comfy is the best way to go.”

A wide grin pressed against Adam’s cheeks, nodding enthusiastically as he gestured for the bartender to bring them what had been requested. “We’ll have to just wait and see whether two rounds turns into three, or four…no one does shots to play it safe, right?” he mused, turning to face his new companion. “I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life — well, besides the fact that Gin and Tonics taste like someone put lawn cutters into a blender,” Adam’s nose scrunched slightly, extending his hand to shake the other’s. “Adam, it’s a pleasure. What brings you out tonight, hm? Anything special?”

image

“What am I getting myself into?” Aiden began questioning himself. Sure, he probably could’ve just asked the other for some Jack and coke, but what was the fun in that? Aiden was always playing it safe, never having more than a couple drinks, just always being the responsible one. “Oh, gin and tonics are a no go. That’s a very good comparison to that drink,” Aiden chuckled. Aiden shook the hand and put his hand back in his pocket. “Pleasure is all mine, Adam. Nothing special. My friends dragged me out, but they all seemed to have found other companions so I figured I’d stick to the bar and away from the crowds of drunk people on the floor right now.”
