I do not disagree with you in anyway on your opinion except one... skunks don’t have to have their scent glands removed necessarily to live with humans a few years back (when the animal planet channel was GOOD) I saw a feature on a “skunk rescue” that housed various skunks (probably Unwanted pets from the problems you mentioned) and the lady made it clear the skunk won’t use their scent defence unless threatened and straight up was holding and petting a scent gland intact skunk while saying it. I just mention this to add to your opinion not hurt it
