well it's been a long time coming, hasn't it...

You sigh to yourself. You’d been in Teyvat for a couple days at this point, and you’d already managed to catch the attention of people in three different continents from this place. After the whole fiasco on Ritou, you got taken back to Liyue where you have begun trying to get on your feet a little bit since Teyvat is now your home for the foreseeable future. As it just so happens, you were now part of the Adventurer’s Guild. Done offscreen for the sake of convenience, you joined it just a day ago. Now essentially being reverted to noob status in Teyvat, you thought it best to stick to the familiar and provide your limited services to the guild for a bit of mora. You miraculously managed to cheese the application process, somehow. Perhaps the harem protagonist’s curse could be used to your advantage.

Something that had been weighing on your mind as of recent was that weird interaction you had with Scaramouche. His highly out of character reaction to being grabbed felt it ran deeper than it let on. So in an attempt at trying to decipher what it could be, you tried to think about it from a logical standpoint. What was something that was different about your interaction with Scaramouche than everyone else? The rusty cogs of your brain began to turn… You grabbed him. You initiated "contact". Walking into the Shogun didn’t seem to do much to her, so maybe for some sort of weird thing to happen, you have to intentionally prompt it. If these weird circumstance mean anything of what you think they do, then you might wanna experiment on someone familiar and rather durable. And who better than the traveler Aether? 

Being part of the Adventurer’s Guild actually made it quite easy to get the information on some people’s whereabouts. As it turned out, Aether was right here in Liyue.

"He just finished his daily commissions. I believe I heard him talking about getting something to eat at Third Round Knockout not far from here. Would you like someone to show you the way? You might not be familiar with Liyue just yet," Katheryne says politely in her usual pose. 

"Nah, it’s alright. I know my way around pretty well." You decline her offer. If anything, that’s an understatement. You know Chihu Rock (almost) like the back of your hand. "Thanks again, though." 

"Well then, ad astra abyssosque, outlander." She waves you off with a warm smile. You return the gesture and head on your way to go and find your test subject. 

Walking down the street, you pass all sorts of real-turned NPCs. They don’t just shout the same lines over and over again and now it looks like they don’t all have the same default models. It’s kinda surreal if you’re being honest. The streets feel so much more alive. Taking you right out of your musings is the "CHEAP AND TASTY CHOP SUEEEEY" line. Turns out some of them are still there.

It doesn’t take long to spot Aether. He was sitting in the usual spot on the edge of the open-air patio. Paimon was sat across from him on a stack of books, chowing down on a comically large bowl of Black-back Perch Stew. It’s kinda weird to actually see the two of them eating non-low-res food. The small floating toddler spots you before Aether seems to, as she intensely waves you down, face still full of food. His confused face turns to a pleasant smile once he sees you. 

"Oh, I didn’t expect you to be here, (Y/N)," he remarks. "Come sit." He pulls out a stool between him and Paimon. It’s still kinda weird hearing him speak rather than Paimon being the mouthpiece. 

You happily take him up on the offer, also making an order of Jade Parcels just before you sit down. It's a lovely day to sit outside. The sun is shining bright, it's warm and you can smell the faint scent of the ocean on the breeze. But now that you’re here, you’ve gotta figure out some way to test your theories also without making it weird as possible. You’ve got an idea in mind, but you can’t execute it just yet. The time isn’t right. 

"How did you get to Liyue?" He asks, tilting his head. His fluffy hair flops on the side of his face. "I didn’t think you’d end up here so quickly." 

"Ah yeah, um— I’ve also managed to get to Inazuma in the past couple of days." 

"HUMFPH? HERW?" Paimon squeaks, mouth still full of food. Both she and Aether look surprised. 

"The night I got first arrived, I somehow managed to sleepwalk out of Mondstadt, all the way to the beach and onto Beidou’s ship. By the time they found me, they were already leaving for Inazuma, so I just had to go there with them. Then I ended up in Ritou for a day until they came back to Liyue harbour, and now I’ve just been trying to make some mora with commissions." You prop your head up with your arms on the table. 

"Oh wow, that’s… quite the adventure," He remarks. "And only in the span of a few days as well?" 

"Yup. We outworlders get up to some wacky stuff, don’t we." You silently recount all the crap you’ve put your characters through back when you just played the game, not actually part of it. You really hope you’re not gonna get stuck just falling while caught between a wall and an inconveniently placed bush… 

Your Jade Parcels are brought right to your table far quicker than you expected them to take. The service is really quick here. The dish almost seems to sparkle with how well-made it looks. Maybe good food still sparkles like it does in game. Now that your food is here, it may as well be as good a time as ever to put your idea into action. So you "accidentally" knock your chopsticks to the ground. They land on the floor in a clutter right next to Aether’s ankles. The moment he reaches down to pick them up off the floor, you duck down as well and purposely brush your hand over his, with the intention of trying to get some sort of reaction. 

AND THERE IT IS. Aether appears to flinch with a strange noise. 

"Are you alright?" You ask, silently gauging his reaction while retracting your hand. 

"Y-yeah, sorry… Here you go," He mutters out, handing you the utensils. Sitting back upright, you notice a faint blush on Aether’s face. He looks down at his empty dish awkwardly, looking somewhat tense. Looks like it worked. But to be sure…

"You sure? You look a bit like you’re burning up." You place the back of your hand onto his forehead. The seemingly innocent action is laden with ulterior motives. And there it is. He tenses up and stammers awkwardly at the contact. 

"Hey, Aether, what’s up with your face? It’s gone kinda red," Paimon comments. She’s finally not chewing for once. 

"I think I just need some water… Excuse me." Aether briefly pardons himself from the table and gets up to go and find a waiter, leaving you alone with Paimon. 

She looks incredibly confused, trying to piece things together in her head. Nothing seems to click. Instead, she just gives up and moves on to eyeing your Jade Parcels really intently. In true Paimon fashion, she asks: "You gonna eat that?" 

"Yes, of course I am." You frown, reaching over to take the chopsticks from the empty seat since yours had been on the floor. T’was a small price to pay for knowledge. However, for an experiment to be statistically significant, you require more subjects. 

Right as you stick one of the dumplings in your mouth (i think they’re dumplings, i’m not 100% sure oof), you spot a familiar blond head across the Chihu Rock plaza. It wasn't Aether, because he was still off looking for water. It was Dainsleif. Huh? And he was looking right at you. What. Did he see your experiments on unsuspecting Aether? Either way, it seems like the universe has blessed you with a potential control group. 

Paimon notices your staring and looks over in the same direction, quickly spotting Dainsleif. Just like with you, she begins to aggressively wave at him while calling out his name. He knows full well that he’s been spotted, as he seems visibly annoyed, but Paimon doesn’t seem to notice or care. He reluctantly makes his way over anyway, stopping just across from your table. 

"Hey Dain!" She chirrups, moving to take another massive bite out of her dish. 

"Hello," He replies in his usual monotone voice. It seems like he didn’t really want to be spotted unless Aether was there. "Who is this?" He gestures to you, which confuses you. Normally you would have expected him to pay zero attention to you, but then again, you’re suddenly a harem protagonist. Logic doesn’t really apply much. 

Dainsleif seems unsurprised to hear this fact. Then again, the man’s a little bit of a brick, so he’s not surprised by much. "So you’re (Y/N)?" 

You blink. "What, have you heard of me?"

"Be warned. Some… dark creatures... are curious about you." 

AYO?

Dainsleif’s speech is as vaguely and cryptically as ever. He didn’t even answer your question. He’s about to turn to leave, but you grab his wrist just before he can go. 

"You mean the Abyss?" You ask, frowning with concern. What the everliving fuck would they want with you?

"You already know about the Abyss?" Dainsleif frowns, confused. He wasn’t expecting that, it seems. "Also, would you please let go of my wrist?" He looks down at your hand. 

Now you finally realize what you did. Whoops—

Dainsleif clears his throat and appears to avert his gaze all of a sudden. His reaction changed right when you realized what you were doing. It seems like not even Dainsleif is immune. You quit stalling and finally drop his hand. He retracts it with an awkward cough. "As I was saying… Yes, it is the Abyss, since you already seem aware of them. Be careful. Trust your instinct and stay away from the dark. Do not trust any strangers for the next while."

"I- um… okay." You really don’t know how to process Dainsleif’s enigmatic warning. "I’ll try not to do anything dumb."

"I should be on my way now…" Dainsleif turns tail with his dramatic cloak and walks off as quickly as he appeared. Once he’s far down the road, you look back at Paimon who looks equally concerned and confused again.

"The Abyss is after you? You’ve only been here a couple days!" She rambles. "Did news about a new outlander really travel that quickly?" 

"Hold on, what?" A different voice suddenly pipes up from behind you. You turn around and find Aether has finally returned. "You’ve already gotten yourself mixed up with the Abyss?" 

"It sounds like it…" You’ve got genuinely no clue how they would have found out. 

"Yeah! Dain just came through and dropped a super weird warning! You just missed him, actually," Paimon explains. 

Aether seems to think for a minute, ultimately deciding on something. "Do you wanna join us for a few days then? At least until you know it’s safe, I suppose." He offers amicably. HERE IT GOES AGAIN. AETHER’S CONFIRMED PART OF THE HAREM NOW. But this is an offer you’re actually going to take up. You’d be much safer around Paimon and Aether than just off on your own. 

"Aha, if you don’t mind..." You clam up a little. "That’d be really helpful. Thank you so much." 

So now you’re joining Aether and Paimon for the next few days. Hopefully this all blows over as quickly as possible, because then who knows how the others would react. Given your current state of affairs, there might be a lot of defensive infighting over you. 

Well, your conclusion of the the day would be that you do indeed have the ability to make someone flustered upon contact. How cursed… Is that why the Abyss is after you? Because you have these wack-ass harem powers? If you do end up falling into the clutches of the Abyss, it would spell definite trouble. As far as you’re aware, you can’t exactly fight. If you getting abyss-napped actually comes to pass, then you’d have to rely on your new god-tier charisma you’ve acquired. Who knows if that would even work on the Abyss…

Betrayal after betrayal, Scaramouche learnt that he should never put his trust in people and should never prostrate himself in front of the divine gaze for they filled him with immense hatred.  He had vowed to destroy all human emotion and get rid of any potential attachment, but under your gaze his resolve wavers. He was unable to let go of these meaningless emotions in your presence, but he was still desperate to make them vanish; he found himself becoming weak. Even though he took pride in having little attachment to fleeting memories, the small changes you bring in his life made him want to forever engrave each moment in his memory.

As with everything else, what offers you enormous happiness can also cause you great pain. The fact that Scaramouche cherished having you by his side doesn't change the reality that he was despised by everyone, including those in his own ranks. His line of work had created more than enough share of enemies. And, while Scaramouche usually saw them as annoying bugs that could be easily dealt with, he was occasionally confronted by those courageous enough to try to harm you. Those moments never failed to make him halt. He had lost so much in his life that losing you would make him lose himself.

If he had a choice, he would never try to experience fear, worry, or grief again. But with you to cherish, it all seems utterly impossible. Time and time again, when he sees you sleeping on a hospital bed to recuperate, he would always repeat these words: "It would've been better if you stayed away from me." His hair would constantly hide his face, but even then, it wasn't hard to imagine what he was feeling. And time and time again, you would always hold his face tenderly and utter sweet endearments that just seemed to melt away his worries and remind him why it is that he chose you to be with. After years of pain, Scaramouche thought he could never care for someone again.

You were a gift bestowed upon him in his somber world. If you were gone, the gods would have more to fear than the heavenly principles.

✦ xiao. 

Xiao never hides the fact that he was burdened with karmic debt. He could still feel the anger of people he had killed, and the effect it had on the people around him was more than enough to convince him that he should lead an isolated life. Most of the time, he was okay with it as long as it stopped him from harming the mortals he vowed to protect. Instead of having others feel his agony, he would prefer to take on all of the burdens himself.

However, there was an idiot who disregarded his warnings and went up to him in an effort to be his friend.

Xiao lost count of the number of times he tried to send you away. No matter how many times he opposed the idea, you always returned with his favorite dish (which he could never resist) and eyes full of unwavering resolve to make a friend of him. He was certain that after a few weeks or months of this routine, you would become weary of it and leave. Mortal lives are short and should be spent treasuring what they are given.

Your perseverance confounded his expectations once more. You still hadn't given up even after he had rejected your advances for half a year.

He made the decision to give you a chance as he felt he had no other option. But even after accepting your efforts, he still can't remain by your side continuously for long periods of time. So to make sure nothing bad would happen to your well being, he advised spending roughly an hour with you.

Who would've imagined that he would grow to crave more time with you for more than merely an hour? Who would've imagined that he would wish for the time to go by more slowly so that he could stay with you longer? Who would have guessed that he would desire to go beyond the restrictions he established for himself in order to enjoy your company?

Alas, despite his desire to be with you, you were already feeling the impacts of his karma. Your body has begun to manifest the negative effects of spending too much time with him. Knowing that he was to blame for your pain, he was horrified when he learned of your illness's onset. He was inevitably set for ruin. You are starting to pay the price since Xiao erred by excessively spending time with you. Despite all of that, you continued to ask for him—the one who made your body feel terrible and sick.

How foolish can you really be? Asking for him in that condition, knowing that it would just aggravate the situation?

He had to stop ignoring your pleas, however. When he finally came to meet you as you had requested, he stood quietly at the door, far from you, and watched as you stretched your hand to him in a gesture of prayer to draw him nearer. He would remain still and remark, "It would've been better if you stayed away from me."  You simply let out a laugh and replied, "If I could turn back time, I wouldn't have done anything different."

So be it. You two have a bond that is too powerful to sever right now. He’ll take your words as a promise to stay by his side.

He gave you a sigil bearing his mark when you had recovered, telling you that it would help shield you from his karmic debt if you insisted on remaining by his side.

The smile he gave you after you gratefully accepted it made your heart soar.

✦ aether.

Aether will admit it: he wasn't great in relationships. It was shocking in itself that he even managed to get with you. His main objectives were to overthrow Celestia and to revive the fallen homeland. Aside from that and his twin sister, nothing else should've mattered. But he can always depend on adversities to stand in the way of his success. And this time, it came in the shape of someone he would come to value.

He moves about often due to his position as prince of the abyss. He had many tasks to complete if he wanted to see his goal fulfilled. This would obviously imply that he was mainly occupied throughout the day. But he made an effort to set aside time specifically for you. He would stop by the castle to see you once a day and would try to stay as long as he could before he had to go again.

You felt alone as you spent a lot of time by yourself in the castle while awaiting the return of your beloved. You had assumed that everything would be fine as long as you had the Abyss Lectors as company, but in the end, they were all incomparable to Aether.

You confronted Aether about it as a result of this. You realize that he had an obligation to carry out his duties as the prince, but he also owes you an obligation as his lover. "Maybe we'd be better off apart if you can't do it," you said. After hearing you say that, he is overwhelmed with sheer terror. As he pulled you into an embrace, panic could be seen in his eyes. He is incapable of doing it; he is unable to picture you content with someone else, someone who would treat you better than he has. You deserve to be with someone who is there for you at all times. You deserve to be with someone who can see you more regularly than just once a day.

He still won't let it happen though.

Please give him another chance—give him a chance to convince you of his love once again. He is unable to bear the idea of losing you. If you were to go, he wouldn't know what to do because you are the only thing that keeps him grounded in his loss. Would it be too selfish for him to want to be the only one for you? Please don't just leave him for someone else. Was he being too greedy? You are the only person he desires to remain until the swords of Celestia strike him.

“You started this thing with me, you’re ending it with me.” 

You caved in. You give him a kiss and grant him an embrace in return, telling him that this is his final opportunity to prove himself.

He never once took his opportunity for granted and genuinely kept his word to you. He spends more time with you than ever before and even includes you in his work so that you never have to experience loneliness again. Of course, there were instances when he had to leave your side, but the kisses he gave you as if you were his last lifeline made you never imagine leaving him again.

Ayato was a well-accomplished head of the Kamisato clan.Many people discuss the outstanding works he has done for the city, and many assumed that a man of his stature would be dating someone as deserving of his achievements. But imagine how shocked the common people were to learn that he was seeing a humble servant in his clan. The one thing these people excel at is talking. Word traveled quickly, and you're now the center of attention. When you were assigned the task of picking up items from stores, people would always stare at you, scrutinizing every inch of you as they spoke about your every flaw. 

The words that before had no meaning suddenly had great significance. A person's mind cannot help but start to believe baseless claims about themselves after being exposed to them repeatedly, even though they know deep down that they are wrong. It had eventually started to impact your relationship with the clan head. Every time he would ask to spend some time with you, you would quickly use work as an excuse and leave him standing.

Ayato was no fool. If he had failed to notice a little change in conduct, he would not have been able to maintain his position as the leader of the Kamisato clan for this long at such an early age. Even more so if I came from you, someone he had spent so much time with that he knew like the back of his hand. He asked the Shuubatsuban to investigate the potential causes behind this shift. As he read every account of what was happening in town, rage flooded his body to a degree that surpassed Yashiori island.

He will approach you at night when you won't be able to use work as an excuse to say no. He won't let you go so easily if you intended to use your fatigue as an excuse to not meet with him, especially considering that this was a crucial issue that required attention. He had waited long enough to finally hold you and properly talk to you again.

You reluctantly explain the situation to him when you were cornered with nowhere else to run and no excuse to pull off. You talk about the stares, criticism, and gossip, how you were no match for someone of his stature, and how he should find someone better to stand by his side and that you should find someone fitting of your status. Instead of being upset with you, Ayato drew you in, allowing your head to collide with his chest as he cradled your body in his arms while he spoke "You started this thing with me, you're ending it with me. I'm not the type to easily let you go. People can say whatever they want, but you're the only one I'll ever want."

That night, you sobbed in his arms as he gently patted your back, his presence as soothing as tranquil waters.

Now, Ayato will always make time to accompany you when you go out, no matter how busy he is. And if they ever dared to talk down to you again, he made sure they knew where they stood by kissing you boldly and shamelessly in front of everyone just to let them know who they were messing with. Oh, now they've gone completely silent? They should have held their tongue at first instead of speaking. Not to worry, he'll make sure they get what they deserve for hurting you. After all, you are to be his engagement partner, yes? They have to start learning how to respect you one way or another.

Love, according to Kaeya, was devoting your life to another—showing your truths, your weaknesses, all of you, no matter how ugly they were. Kaeya had no idea someone could so easily destroy the walls he spent years putting up. To be able to get the Captain to be himself around you for even a second was a feat in and of itself. This is especially the case when it is prolonged.

To him, love was more than just a declaration of feelings; it was a vow to be kept until the end of time. Love is sacred, and so should the people with whom you share such feelings with.

As flirtatious as he may appear, once he found the one with whom he envisioned to spend eternity, those habits and actions would cease. He couldn't afford to miss out on this miracle that had happened right in front of his eyes, nor did he want to test the waters to see if it could happen again. Life only comes around once, so no matter who you are, make the most of it.

“You started this thing with me, you’re ending it with me.” He saw no reason to act confident around you—to act like someone he isn't. He can be himself with you. There are no fears or worries in his mind, nor is he thinking about anything other than you.
