Honey (Kaeya x M!Reader)
CONTENT WARNING: Internalized homophobia, cursing, alcohol/drunkenness, fist fight scene and mentions of blood
Before Reading: this one-shot uses the f-slur a few times but please keep in mind that I am a lesbian who has been called this word many times in the past so I am reclaiming it through writing. like in the content warning, this story is basically all internalized homophobia so if this subject makes you wary - please don’t read! story is under the cut for sensitive topics

you had always known you weren’t quite human.
it wasn’t something you were told. (it wasn’t like there was anyone around to tell you anyways.) the feeling was just there, haunting and lingering. it followed you the night you left liyue, when you escaped with nothing but a bag and a burning vision, and it was present when you fell into the sea in a flurry of sparks and ashes and emerged alive.
and it was here now, as you sat in your cage of crystal and frost, as you curled up and suffocated in the cold (and oh, it was so, so cold.)
even from the throne room, the thundering was unmistakable. it was the sound of an army on the horizon, of a nation on the brink of destruction. each step resonated within your core, but the roaring calls and shrill laughter could not hide the wails echoing throughout the city.
you peered through the spaces of your prison to the window. the horde was fast approaching and, under the light of the moon, they seemed like a wave of shadow, come to drown the very heart of snezhnaya. it would not take long to reach the edges of the city.
a spark flitted between your fingers, despite the absence of a vision. you turned your head to stare at it, pondering. (the harbingers didn’t seem to notice, too busy and too frantic.) should you? this was not your nation nor your home—you had been kept here as a trophy—but innocents should not die for the actions of others.
so you let it snap.
bolts of lightning fractured the sky, bridging and linking in the blink of an eye. those at the forefront crashed into the line and evaporated in a swirl of smoke and sparks. gasps sounded from around the cage, but you hardly noticed. shrieks erupted and the march came to a stuttering halt.
and for one brilliant moment, the world went silent.
until it wasn’t, and the night was filled with roars again, but of anger this time. the barrier flashed and flickered, bolts of electricity crackling in the air. violet and violent in the frigid weather, it was a wall keeping the horde at bay. you breathed. some time had been bought.
through fluttering eyes and diminishing sight, you vaguely noticed the inky clouds swirling in the sky, ominous through the window. beautiful, you thought, and terrible. before the world went dark though, you caught a pair of familiar golden eyes from beyond the storm. the message was clear.
this is war.
the door stares at you. you stare back.
while strange, materializing doors in forests is definitely a grounds for running the hell away, you are captivated by it instead. of course, you had always been drawn to strange things, so perhaps that should not have been surprising.
your eyes flicker down to the doorknob. in the early light of day, it almost seems to glow. you put a hand on it, the other gripping your backpack.
well, it isn’t like you’re going to be late to school. it wasn’t starting for another two hours, anyways. you can afford to take a detour. so, with one final look behind, you twist the handle and step forward.
only for your foot to land on nothing.
“HOLY SH—“
and then you are plummeting down.
your hand darts forwards to catch your fall. unfortunately, there is nothing to catch onto, and you are met with rushing, howling winds. are you screaming? you aren’t sure. it’s getting increasingly difficult to breathe, and the tempest continues to rage against you. you squint. stormy skies blur. a mass of blue flashes across you vision and then—
“oomph—!”
you land with a muted thud, and it buckles slightly.
the wind is knocked out of you, and a roar erupts from the thing you landed on. you feel the reverberations ripple like an airplane engine. hands scramble to grab onto something, until they grasp onto rough fibers.
your vision is obscured by splashes of sky blue and teal. despite this, you press yourself closer to the...animal? creature? but it can’t be. you may not have remembered everything from physics class but common sense says that there is no way an animal this size should be able to fly, not to mention that it’s blue. this has to be a drea—
you yelp as the creature throws you off.
time slows just enough for you to see. glowing eyes and massive wings, and its horns fade into azure. you’re in awe. it’s a dragon. (it’s eerily familiar.)
but there’s still the issue of you plummeting to your death.
you screw your eyes tight. this is it. this is how you are going to die, and—
“careful!”
your peripheral catches yellow and porcelain white before a body crashes into your side and knocks the air out of you. black spots dance in your vision, and you’re so winded that you only realize you’ve stopped falling when your sneakers touch solid ground.
your knees buckle under you and you crumple onto stone and concrete. oh thank god, you’re not dead after all.
“hey! hey, are you okay?” a voice asks you frantically. “did she just—?”
“paimon saw her fall out of the sky!”
paimon…?
your head snaps up at the mention of the familiar name. paimon, the genshin guide fairy? she can’t actually exist, right? but crouched down in front of you is a girl clad in red and brown and oh, oh it’s amber.
you blink rapidly and shake your head. this can’t be real.
but the ground you are sitting on is too solid, the colors too vivid to be a dream. a hand is put on your shoulder, and you look up to see lumine and paimon, the latter of which hovers above. you look around and see mondstadt, exactly like how it had been shown in the game. it’s windy. you move to stand up, albeit shakily.
you take a breath. “where—“
“well, well. isn’t this interesting.”

you are a god.
you are a human.
alone.
“i wish you would forgive yourself.”
you sit on the wooden railing of the balcony with your back turned to the world, legs kicking back and forth slightly. wangshu inn is a lantern lit heaven in the night, and you happen to be one of the many fireflies it has attracted.
xiao stares at you like you’re insane. “someone like me doesn’t deserve forgiveness. not after what i’ve done.” his mouth twists into a frown and you can already see him start to brood. “i’ve told you this.”
you sigh for the millionth time. “and i’ve told you that you shouldn’t suffer for something out of your control. and you’ve done more than enough to atone. besides—“ you take his hand in yours. “you’re so much more than your karma. i think you should recognize that.”
his scoffs at the idea, but you notice he doesn’t move to untwine your interlaced fingers. you grin a little.
“so, are you gonna come to the lantern rite?”
the lantern rite is absolutely stunning.
hundreds of glimmering lanterns dot the skies, hanging above liyue harbor and floating for miles on end. the moon, more alive than dead for once, hangs in the night. this year is particularly spectacular, likely because of the too-recent attack on the city.
despite the pointlessness of it all, it’s one of the things xiao allows himself to admire.
“it’s pretty, isn’t it?”
ah, you. the reason why he’s here in the first place, somehow.
perhaps it was your persistence, or the circumstances, or any number of other variables that could have led to this moment. begrudgingly, xiao admits to himself that he doesn’t regret coming here as much as he thought he would.
and then he looks over at you. you’re positively glowing, and his breath catches.
the lantern rite might be stunning, but you are nothing short of breathtaking.
to be vulnerable is to let yourself be bare, soft; to strip away everything until the only thing left is flesh and bone and skin. it is to carve out your soul and leave it at the mercy of someone else— trusting that they won’t leave you when you refuse to let yourself be anything but alone.
to xiao, a liability.
he is a weapon, an agent of bloodshed. vulnerability can only mean suffering for anyone who chooses to stay. (to be vulnerable is to be human, and he is anything but. when scarlet inks his hands, it is not of an innocent’s anymore. no longer the stain of humans, but of demons. this duty is repentance.)
and yet he finds himself soft for you.
soft, your hands as they cradle his face. and so, so warm. you tuck a lock of hair behind his ear, sweep a thumb across his bare cheek, and oh, how his heart trembles. he leans into your touch, shaky in resolve. (for how the mighty fall. for how long has it been since anyone has been this tender with him?)
and when you press a kiss to his lips, he lets himself melt into your hold. you are purer than anything he could ever dream of. you, divine and more than he deserves.
xiao is nothing like you, but perhaps he can learn.
you’ve known ajax for as long as you can remember. from the barren winter of your youth to the maze-like woods by morepesok, all of it is inextricably linked back to a hesitant, earnest grin and shining blue eyes.
somewhere in the woods is a crack in the ground. it’s stark against the snow—but rather unremarkable otherwise. he joked about falling in sometimes—“maybe someone took a wrong turn while ice fishing. what do you think?”—but you’d always drag him away before he got any other ideas. after all, ajax had always wanted an adventure for himself, however nervous he may be. (personally, it gave you chills, and not just because it was snezhnaya.)
that all changes when he goes missing at 14.
you find him three days later standing over the crack, as if he’d just crawled out. once upon a time, it’d just been a strange landmark, perhaps a start of some story. whenever you think about it now, you’re brought back to fresh, scabbed scars, deadened blue eyes, and a confident, terrible smile.
you suspect ajax died sometime within those three days.
his new thirst for violence frightens his parents. his siblings are too young to know any better, so the night he’s sent away, you make a promise to wait for him.
“you make a pinkie promise, you keep it all your life. you break a pinkie promise, i throw you on the ice.” his eyes have never been brighter. “the cold will kill the pinkie that once betrayed your friend…”
you curl your pinkie around his. “the frost will freeze your tongue off so you never lie again.”
he smiles then, something unfamiliar and unsettling. “oh, when i return, i’ll take you on the greatest adventure there is.” and as you watch him leave, you think the wind howls fiercer than ever.
a few years pass. you hear about him sometimes, about his promotion to harbinger, a few rumors about his battles. (they call him something else now.) you keep your promise for the most part, but decide to visit liyue one summer for something new. it’s nothing like snezhnaya, jade city and sun-drenched land, and above all—it’s golden. it’s a dream.
you’re speaking to a tall consultant when you hear him.
“hey! it’s been a while, comrade!”
when you turn around, you’re met with blue eyes and a smile—all teeth and no hint of that young boy you once knew.
you think childe, tartaglia, is a stranger to you.

First time drawing a character from Genshin:
VS. The most recent time I (finished) drawing a character from Genshin:
I’d say I’ve improved.
Damn, Genshin really did do Legends: Arceus before Legends: Arceus could do Legends: Arceus
Wow it’s been a hot minute since I posted any art, so have an Itto!
Playing 2.6, assuming that the Archon quest is going to be short as hell considering the length of this filler quest that’s forcing me to do it instead of the archon quest itself which, realistically, the traveller wouldn’t prioritize if there’s something possibly Abyss Order related in The Chasm.
I just want to let whoever the fuck at Hoyoverse thought it was a good idea to end off chamber 10 in spiral abyss with the cicin mage mirror maiden combo I hope you have a genuinely awful day <3
