is this gay or heartbreaking or both

Kate watched them go, and kept the frown off her face. The change of mood was quite striking. ‘Sometimes you get the clown,’ her father had said, in his final illness, ‘sometimes you get the ancient beast.’ Then he’d started to laugh which had set him off coughing again, and she’d had to sit him up and get him some water. When he’d recovered, he corrected himself. ‘Actually, I think you always get both.’ And he’d given her that smile which had always comforted her as a child, but now just made him look frail and old. They’d sat in silence with only the clock ticking and the rain at the windows.
‘God, I miss that man,’ he had said at last.
‘Maybe he’ll visit tomorrow,’ she had said, her hand tight on his.
‘Maybe tomorrow,’ he had smiled, closing his eyes.
She could never decide, over the years, if those were the best or the saddest last words.
Best friends, she’d thought. She fought down the memory of the dying old soldier in the hospice. Maybe tomorrow.
I’m sorry, said a voice in her head, and it almost froze her. She’d been briefed about the Doctor’s occasional telepathy: low level, they’d said, and rarely used. I miss him too.
Not now, she thought back at him, we’ve got work to do. She felt her cheeks flush and her jaw tighten: he should have the damn decency to stay out her head!
As you wish, said the Doctor, and stepped politely away. But as I returned to my own thoughts, I took an image of Kate’s dying father with me, and filed it for later: Alistair waiting for me. ‘One should live with one’s sins,’ I’d told a young man once, though I couldn’t remember who or why.

so i know this is probably all ramping up to the doctor being part of the pantheon/from outside the universe, with their function being to fix, heal, and improve (“doctor”)- but they also said “where i come from, everyone goes by titles”…. not true! gallifreyan renegades & exiles went by titles, with some complicated exceptions (like drax, valeyard) -but i think it’s funny that all of these powerful mysterious new beings are going by work-related titles and the doctor isn’t the least bit suspicious like…. girl i know you can hear the non-diegetic music but can you see the foreshadowing

i am reading a biography of terry nation and apparently the first 'how do daleks go up stairs' letter that the bbc received was while the first dalek serial was still airing, fandom culture never changes

yeah, the beast thing is so weird. I'm currently making my way through the 5th Doctor's run, so it's fresher in my mind, but the Mara's who shtick it that it's some local god born of the hatred and violence in one's soul (i think????? haven't checked the wiki and also Kinda's one of those episodes where things just start happening). So there is a point you can make about how violence and hate turns people into monsters and beasts, but God of Corruption, Insanity or the Mind. The Mara's a lot closer to how Sutekh is kind of acting so far, with possessing people and all that, so I also hope we see a modern exploration of the Mara. The current direction with the Pantheon is a little reductive, but I guess because it got banished it hitched a ride back into the universe with everyone too ig??? still forming my opinions on the whole pantheon stuff, but i do agree that the Mara would be great to see beyond the little cameo in TLoRS.

Did anyone else feel like the Mara should have been the god of the mind? It's been a while since I've seen the stories featuring it but if I remember correctly he didn't actually have anything to do with beasts outside of the fact he was a snake. But he was constantly possessing people, and screwing with their minds, so I feel like that would have been a better fit for his domain... Idk though, like I said it's been a few years since I watched Kinda/Snakedance so I might have forgotten something about how he was letting out the animal within or whatever. Anyway I hope they come back next, because they were a fun villain
