The paper wrapped around the flowers crinkled in his grasp as he approached your door. Despite everything, he was nervous: there was always an underlying fear that you’d take one look at the flowers in his hands and scoff, or roll your eyes, or flat-out call him an idiot and that you hated flowers and he should know it. When he asked you before, you had shrugged, said they were fine, and went on with what you had been doing.  Despite it all, he took another look down at the bouquet in his hands. With a hard swallow, he raised a hand to your door… and then hesitated.

The flowers crinkled in his grasp again as he tightened a fist around them. A quick glance down to make sure that they aren’t breaking underneath his fingers was enough to sway his thoughts. They’re fine. This was fine. This was going to go fine.
