Primo Has That Weird Thing In This Show That While Hes Dangerous And Unhinged Theres A Strange Innocence
primo has that weird thing in this show that while he’s dangerous and unhinged there’s a strange innocence to him at times, or maybe less innocence and more childlike in some of his mannerisms (namely this scene and the scene where he’s showing off his paper plane mastery) and it’s so telling here is a man who strives for both independence and family acceptance (he tries with salvatore, he rly does, and if salvatore hadn’t named someone else as his heir i bet primo would have been willing to share his vision with salvatore in an attempt to gain that acceptance) which causes him to b in state of limbo, caught inbetween the independence he should have as a man his age and the childish hope of being valued by a father figure that doesn’t care; in this scene, primo is basically acknowledging that he knows deep down that the path he’s going down will result in him being alone, if he jumps (becomes bigger and better) he will b doing it alone bc no one believes in him; i think he’s also scared that this will signal his true independence from salvatore, who he wants to impress and b praised by BUT that’s what makes primo’s ending so satisfying because he doesn’t go alone, his leap of faith pays off, he doesn’t need a blood relative to make his worth real, he has the whole of calabria when so many others in this show end up with nothing

thinking about gail’s line in the last episode that goes “all this happened bc i let a little boy drift away” and how the same can b said for don salvatore; if he had held primo close and accepted him, he wouldn’t have had to die
john silver refusing to share his backstory is one of the most tragic parts of black sails. because it’s not just that he refuses to speak of it, he is genuinely unable to put it into words. this man who can talk himself out of every bad situation into a good one can’t find it within himself to put meaning to whatever horrors he faced before the start of the series. he just can’t. because it’s that terrible. even when he has flint standing in front of him with no ulterior motives, just this great love and affection for him, asking john to tell his own story. john basically begs flint not to ask or push for an answer; isn’t this enough? john is asking. black sails at its core is about how important it is to take control over your own narrative and john just can’t do it. flint is asking nothing of him but to be himself and he can’t do it.
i am convinced that primo and leonardo were gonna murk salvatore on that goddamn mountain in episode 8 primo had already decided salvatore had to die after he announced francesco as his heir (bc as far as salvatore knew at that point primo had gotten the money and made them all rich, but it wasn’t enough. primo saw in real time that nothing he’d ever do would change that) anway !!!! this episode was a masterpiece of television
