So, it's been a while so I might be remembering it worse than it actually was but.. anyone else think Shun's grandpa was kind of an asshole?

he was an asshole but only in the eng dub.

in the jpn dub, shun's grandfather is a pretty okay guy. he tells shun to hurry to the hospital because his mother is in critical condition, and after her passing, he informs shun that his mother had meant to give him skyress as a birthday gift. shun quits playing bakugan and isolates himself from his friends out of grief and his grandfather respects his decision.

in the eng dub, however, shun's grandfather is the one who forced shun to quit playing bakugan and to stop interacting with his friends, wanting him to focus solely on his ninja training. the moment shiori is hospitalized indefinitely (for whatever reason?? the wiki says she's in a coma but the dub doesn't really explain what happened to her) his grandfather announces to shun that he's gonna live under different and more strict house rules. shun detests this but has no choice but to obey.

there's a big discrepancy in the writing of these two versions that create plot holes but only when it comes to the eng dub. i've talked about it here in depth but tldr: because the eng dub refused to acknowledge that shiori died, it ends up cheapening some of the story elements (namely that shun views skyress as a second mother and his mother's keepsake) as well as demonizing certain characters (grandpa kazami.)

if shun hates his grandfather so much, why do we see the two hanging out with absolutely no hostility between them? if grandpa kazami wants shun to stop hanging out with his friends, why is he interacting with shun's friends as if he has no problem with them?

it's because grandpa kazami was never supposed to be portrayed as an abusive relative and the eng dub couldn't keep this change consistent across the season.

it's exactly the same problem as with plitheon and jesse in season 3. the eng dub arbitrarily changed their "death scene" so that plitheon turned against jesse but during the final episodes, the two of them are interacting as if plitheon doesn't hate jesse. that's because he never did! but i digress.

Honestly, rewatching some parts of Bakugan: New Vestroia, I get the feeling that there was one (1) SpectraGus fan on the inside who was just trying to shove little moments in-between all of the lengthy toy advertisement action

It's really like that with a lot of the character stuff in this series, it feels like there were a few people among the creators who had really good ideas for the writing, but they were only allowed to add small bits of it into the whole thing, because it was deemed "irrelevant to the plot" or "uninteresting" or whatever
