1812 Hot Chocolate
There is nothing like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold day and that also applied to Sailor aboard a ship. This recipe comes from an 1814 book called “The Artist’s Companion, and Manufacturer’s Guide, Consisting of the Most Valuable Secrets in Arts and Trades.” It is similar to what is called “Mexican Hot Chocolate” today. While officers may have had access to the somewhat exotic ingredients needed for this recipe, sailors probably made do with sugar and water. Mrs. Child, in The American Frugal Housewife (1833), suggests that nutmeg improves the taste of chocolate, and since this was a common spice, seamen could have grated it into their cups.
A receipt for making chocolate:
Ingredients: Cocoa Sugar in cubes (lump sugar) Water or milk
Optional: Vanilla Cinnamon Nutmeg Mexican Pepper Cloves
Tools: Stove Pot Spoon Wax paper
1. In a copper pan, mix a little powdered royal cube sugar with a little orange water. When the sugar has turned into a syrup, add the cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, Mexican pepper and cloves. cloves, all of which are previously crushed to an intangible powder. into an intangible powder. Serves 1 cup of liquid (water or milk) to 1 person. Sugar, cocoa and spices to taste.
Not only is raw cocoa actually very healthy and contains a considerable amount of caffeine, it also lifts the spirits and was therefore popular among the various navies as a pick-me-up, even though it was very expensive at the time. But in this respect, no one let themselves down and allowed their sailors this kind of luxury.

The JFJ Sweater - A “Pattern” and Tips for Knitting
Some folks have asked me for the pattern for the JFJ gansey sweater, and while I don’t have a “full” pattern, hopefully this post will help you be able to make your own! You will need this pattern from Knitty for an argyle gansey. It’s free! :) I used the stitch counts and construction almost exactly as written in this pattern, but swapped in the Fitzjames cables and moss stitch for the argyle charts.
[Notes: the bodies of most ganseys are done in two distinct sections: from the waist band to mid-torso is knit in plain stockinette stitch, then the mid-torso to neck is worked in any combination you like of cables, textures, ridges, ladders, etc. The “Arguyle” pattern does not have a plain knit bottom section, however JFJ’s sweater in the show does. Also, while JFJ’s sweater in the show has side and shoulder seams, the “Arguyle” pattern and many historical ganseys are knit in one piece with no seaming, so that’s what I went with for my recreation].

Headcanon idea:
Merlin gets tired of waiting and goes to sleep in a tree. Some time later Albion’s greatest need comes. Arthur and everyone else are reborn, their memories return to them by their 20s, and they have to save the world, essentially.
They manage to find each other, figure out what’s going on, and somehow they even don’t kill each other in the process (specifically, Arthur and the knights and Gwen manage not to kill Morgana and Mordred, who are reborn too and get their second chance to do the right thing). Except that they totally need Merlin, and he’s nowhere to be found. Until druids (now widely known as “hippie”; most of them live in America now – much more forests left there than in Britain, – but they visit their historical homeland sometimes…) tell them that he’s sleeping in a tree somewhere in a national park not far from Glastonbury Tor. But nah, they don’t know in which tree. Good luck in your search, The Once and Future King, we’re cheering for you!
So on the brink of an apocalypse Arthur and the party go camping. They walk around, trying to guess what tree it can be: is it this five hundred years old oak? Is it that lone pine? Or maybe this broad ash?
Morgana casts some ancient spells to call for Merlin with her magic. Mordred performs druids’ rites to ask the nature to help them. Gwen and Lancelot are kissing behind the bushes, Leon keeps updating the news feed on his classy last model iPhone, making sure that the world is not ending just yet, Percival and Gwaine are fencing with wooden branches, Elyan is dozing in the grass and Arthur is wandering around, hugging random trees and tapping on their trunks.
He has a vague sense of dejavu, but he can’t quite point his finger on it. Something from his childhood, maybe?
