I pour red wine into a goblet and hand it to my husband who gives me a warm smile as he takes it. I pour one for myself and we raise our goblets together. 

‘To our health,’ he says and we clink them together. I laugh as Kayden downs his; it is his night off from guard duty and he is glad of it. For a whole month, he has worked night and day to protect the kingdom and its inhabitants. Tonight, wine and family time is his reward.

Our son, Enzo, sits beside me. He is reading, an interest that was passed down from me to him. He could devour books all day if he could.  At only eight years old, Enzo is already so responsible and serious. I think it’s because his father spends a lot of time working, leaving the house without a protector. Enzo takes on the ‘man of the house’ role in his absence, despite my attempts to reassure him that we will always be safe. 

I feel a kick inside my stomach and let out a gasp. Kayden practically jumps up from his chair, his instincts kicking in. He is always ready to protect me. ‘Athenais?’

I smile happily. ‘The baby is kicking again.’

Kayden sits back down and a grin spreads on his face. He is so looking forward to our new arrival. I am only a few months along but we visited an Oracle when we first married who predicted we would have a son and a daughter in our lifetime.  Our culture puts great stock into fortune telling and since we already have Enzo, we think we’re on the path the Oracle predicted for us. For our baby, we have already settled on the name Aria. 

Life is good. Kayden is Captain of the Royal Guard and draws a good salary so we can live comfortably. We live in a villa named Villa Limona which is located on a narrow alleyway near the Old Town Square. Olive trees mark our front door and it’s a happy house filled with love and laughter. Kayden works hard to protect the king and his country, while I write Cordonian histories which fill libraries and will be passed down through generations. But nothing makes us happier than our life together.

Kayden pulled himself up from the floor and took a deep breath.

Be calm. Remember your training. Losing it now will only bring you defeat.

Yet, despite his training that required him to be stoic and unflinching, Kayden feit lost. Adrift. His house was destroyed and his family had vanished.

He knew he had told Athenais to escape with their son. He had even given Enzo premeditated instructions on how to get away with it. Kayden had acted like the Captain he was, ignoring every instinct that urged him to just forget his job, forget the crown for one moment and just be the family man he was.

But Kayden had been taught by his mentors that to feel emotion like that was dangerous. He had to think logically and he knew he had done the right thing by telling his wife to escape with their son.

His pregnant wife.

Kayden blocked out the thoughts in his mind and willed himself to focus.

He had told them to ride their fastest horse to the city gates and keep going. That in itself was good thinking on his part because their fastest horse, Atlas, was actually the fastest horse in Cordonia. He was a loyal companion and had been Kayden’s one constant through his darkest moments. Atlas would get them to safety.

Atlas had to get them to safety.
