Reblogging To Raise Awareness Of This Cool Campaign

Reblogging to raise awareness of this cool campaign šŸ«–šŸ

A page spread entitled "Helpful Pot of Mouse". There's a lot of text and it's not really the focus of this post -- the point here is to show off the look & layout. The left-hand page has the title, a row of icons, a short block of text, and an illustration. The illustration shows a piece of mouse-shaped pottery with floral designs painted on it, out of which red mouse-like constructs made from wine & herbs are emerging. There are also marginal notes designed to look as though they appear in two different hands. The right-hand page has a lengthy "Optional Play" section and a sidebar, under which is an illustration in a sketch-like style of one of the mouse constructs. Around the edges of both pages are apparent wine stains, including some that are noticeably shaped like rows of mouse footprints, and a couple that look suspiciously like someone has rested a cup on the book.

A sample page spread from the GM's Guide in our current kickstarter project, a collection of 50 system-neutral magic items for TTRPGs inspired by medieval literature, marginalia, and archaeology.

Okay, technically this one is inspired by pre-medieval archaeology, but come on. Look at it. You can't be mad at those little mice.

This was inspired by the following item of ancient pottery, currently held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (link here):

A photograph of a pottery vessel shaped like a mouse, painted with floral designs.

And no, I cannot explain how or why I decided that this thing should be used to make helpful mouse-constructs out of wine. But if you want it to do that for you, you can back the kickstarter at the link below -- it runs until the end of June.

I'm taking an online class about Buddhism that's offered by a Tibetan Buddhist Abbey that's about an hour away from me and this week I introduced a bunch of people to the concept of hopepunk and in his response to my weekly reflection the class facilitator said "I would tend to agree with the hope punks, hope and compassion are radical ideas." And I'm just loving the words "the hope punks." We're punk cuz we have hope for a better future. Nihilism can't be found here. We're the hope punks.

My grandma just called and, among other things, saidĀ ā€œYou have hips. Thatā€™s good! Men like hips!ā€ and then she interrupted herself to sayĀ ā€œWomen like hips. People of your preferred gender like hips. I can never rememberā€Ā  And I was likeĀ ā€œThanks grandma! My preferred gender is none of them, no thanks.ā€ and she was likeĀ ā€œOkay, no one will comment on your hips!ā€ very self satisfied, likeĀ ā€œaha, I have figured it outā€ I think like half her grandkids are some variety of not-straight and she canā€™t always remember which is which but she is the epitome of like ā€œsheā€™s a little confused, but sheā€™s got the spirit!ā€

The possessive Wimchlat

A brush pen sketch of a wolf, with a shaggy mane and tail, and spotted rosette pattern across its back and side. It is facing three-quarters towards the viewer, and has its left rear leg raised, peeing on the ground where there appears a shining hexagonal jewel.

My response to this weekā€™s BestiaryPosting challenge from @maniculum - thank you again for running these challenges!

Pencil sketch, then lines in Pentel brush pen. Another quick one this week, but I'm pretty happy with it :)

Reasoning below the cutā€¦

"It is a beast marked with spots on its back like those of a pard, but it resembles a wolf: its urine is said to harden into a valuable jewel called [redacted]. The Wimchlats know that this is valuable, as is proved by the exceptional care with which they cover it with sand: they are naturally jealous, and cannot bear it to fall into the hands of man. Pliny says that Wimchlats only bear cubs once."

We don't have a lot to go on, apart from that it resembles a wolf. I could have spend some time making it more 'wolf-like' but in the interest of expediency what we have here is mostly a wolf. We do have some rosette spots, like a leopard, which were really fun to draw, and one of the reasons I picked the brush pen again (plus I feel like I'm getting better at controlling the lines!).

Here we see a Wimchlat mid-creation of a valuable jewel :)
