The reason, according to my teachers (and I agree) is that the relationships and characters are so compelling. You care about whether the characters die! Hollywood's takeaway was "let's make a bazillion one-word-title movies about monster-creatures eating people who are generic, uninteresting characters." Bet you can't name more than two now.
