I Feel Like Too Many Times, People Focus On The Negative Aspects Of A Lot Of Media.
I feel like too many times, people focus on the negative aspects of a lot of media.
It is very important to remain critical of what we consume and understand that it’s not perfect, but at the same time we can’t let a few mistakes or problems warp our entire view of it.
There are some things that are inexcusable, absolutely. There are reasons why I just can’t get behind Dragon Maid, despite having a wonderful down to earth wlw story, but there are other stuff like RWBY, Steven Universe, and a bunch of other shows that have their problems but they shouldn’t be overshadowed by their mistakes. Because I feel they have more good going for them.
It’s fine if those shows just aren’t your cup of tea too. You have every right not to watch it if you don’t enjoy it. But to say the show is entirely bad because of a few mistakes isn’t really fair..

It’s been a bit of time since steven universe has ended and you know what? I feel like we are not being entirely fair to pink diamond/rose quartz.
A lot of her backstory is fed to us backwards.
When we are first introduced to her we are shown who she is after she had gone through all of her development and growing up. We are literally seeing her character at her best. As the story goes on we do get to see more and more of her flaws and mistakes, we see a “regression” because we are going deeper into her past and seeing the person she was, someone that I’m 90% sure that if she looked back on she would feel ashamed of or at least embarrassed of.
I’m not saying that she should be forgiven though but I am saying that pushing the narrative that Pink Diamond is a villain because of how much of a shitty person she was in her past is kind of....not right? I suppose? I’m a firm believer of “you’re not the same person you were 10 years ago” and I believe that’s the Pink Diamond we are seeing in the future.
Yes the Gems are hurt when they find out that Rose is Pink but also consider...maybe the Gems didn’t need to know. No one would rally behind Pink Diamond. No one would look to what is basically a spoiled Princess as their leader and march with her into war. But they would with Rose. And As Rose she could become a new person, a better one. She could be someone who does better and is better. Make others happy rather than hurting them. She could be someone who fights for life and fights for gem’s rights to be who they want to be and live the lives they want to live.
I feel like a lot of people forget how...selfless Rose became. She might’ve still be selfish a little, but i doubt a truly selfish person would give themselves up to create another being as she did with Steven. Especially considering how Gems especially Diamonds don’t really have a concept of ever dying beyond being shattered. Rose is flawed and she’s definitely not perfect. She hadn’t truly made up for all of the mistakes she’s made, but have you? Have any of us made up for all of our mistakes in the past? How many loose ends have we left behind?
Well I guess, I’m just saying Rose isn’t a horrible villain. She is a flawed person who grew to become a better one. And while she is not perfect, I think we can still appreciate the things she’s accomplished and all of the gems’ lives she’s made better by showing them how to fight back.

i made one of those expression memes for fun!! anyone can use it if they want to ^_^
I’m going to say something controversial. While I don’t think RWBY did the best job at handling the whole racial allegory, I think they put in some really good stuff that had the potential to really be something. Like with Adam and Ilia showing the two sides of people who were (rightfully) angry at their oppressors and how Adam let that consume him into a power hungry monsters and how Ilia was able to overcome her angry and eventually direct it to something more constructive and not destructive.
Many people didn’t like the stuff with Menagerie but I feel it had a lot of good shit. There are extremists out there born from oppression and it’s also shown how people will equate one groups actions to the whole and how much the White Fang had hurt their cause more under Adam’s leadership then helped. It’s also good to know that the White Fang were not always that way with Blake’s dad being the previous leader who steps up to that role again once he sees how much the Faunus needs the White Fang and how they need a leader who doesn’t let their own hatred and anger cloud their better judgement.
While I admit I don’t really get how the whole Faunus thing works into the overall plot and feels more like world building flavor text, I’ll give the writers some props to trying to tackle it and I feel that as the series went on they did a better job at showing how prejudice and work in our society and who it’s not always in your face racism. Sometimes it’s snide comments, or seeing how minorities tend to be more impoverished. Atlas and Mantle does a good job at showing this and not just telling. You see more faunus in Mantle and barely any in Atlas, there is also Marrow who I think is a wonderful show don’t tell character too!
Idk i’m rambling. I think what I’m saying is, yes the RWBY racism allegory stuff isn’t the best, and it certainly doesn’t start out great, but I feel as they get into it later on you can definitely see the improvement.
