hello! I saw your post about Kayvan Novak and Mark Proksch's repeated racism and blackface, and I'd just like to know if you have or know of any posts that go into a bit more detail on that, as I'm not familiar with any of either of their other work, and I'd like to know a bit more details about it so I can better call them out.

So for Mark Proksch, it appears his use of blackface was for a joke about Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), which is an elf a part of some European countries who helps Saint Nicholas at Christmas. White people in Europe dress up in blackface for this character, and for the Christmas episode of the office, Proksch’s character dresses up as one of these blackface elves.

For Kayvan, his comedy in the show Facejackers is basically Sweet Dee’s ignorant racial, cultural comedy without the supposed layer of irony. He dresses up as a Jewish stereo type, an African stereotype, a white French stereotype, etc etc. Kayvan repeatedly donned blackface to appear as a Ugandan person who scams people. In a 2017 interview, he said that he was a guy who could “get away with playing all the races.” I’ve had people on twitter tell me he’s allowed to wear blackface because he’s Iranian, but that’s just not true. His comedy showcases xenophobic and racist attitudes for the sheer sake of endorsing stereotypes.

It may seem like I’m being easier on Mark here, but that’s only the case because Kayvan’s insensitivity is repeated and egregious. Mark dresses up (in really really truly awful) blackface for a joke about cultural ignorance. I definitely don’t endorse The Office’s use of blackface; one of these instances is just much more ingrained in the other’s comedy. [It should be stated Kayvan’s show ran 2010-2012, and Mark’s racist episode of The Office “Dwight Christmas” aired in 2012].

It’s also I think a problem with the FX network who greenlit Its Always Sunny continues to renew Sunny despite their blackface, yellowface, brownface, and use of the n-word. It makes perfect sense that the FX network would be fine with hiring these two actors.
