I think I do treat canon couples and ships differently.

Ships absolutely don’t have to be canon, or be even close to canon in any way. It’s just a fun exploration of this AU ‘what if those two become a thing’. Canon couples are different.

Thus. I love shipping Hunter/Willow! But them becoming canon couple is errrrr. Not my biggest wish. Maybe like in the veeeeery end as a hint for this to be a possibility. Why? Because lumity.

Amity’s desire to become a better person was because of Luz only. Amity pushing back against her abusive family is because of Luz. Amity is Luz’s girlfriend only and doesn’t properly interact with anyone else. And if she does, it’s about Luz. (Luz herself disregarded the fact that Amity was Willow’s bully and wanted to be her friend before things were patched up.)

I don’t want the same for Hunter. I don’t want his desire for better life be only because of Willow. I don’t want him pushing back against his abuser to be for Willow. I don’t want the crush/romance being added in already crowded situation with his living conditions, his mental health, his physical health, everything with Belos, his brainwashing program, etc. It’s just too much.

Soooo yeah. As a ship? Lovely.(in a fiction we can pace things up much better thanks to the media) As a canon couple? Just too much for narrative and show plot. But I do want them to be close friends.

I'm re-watching TDWT right now and I noticed that Cody was being picked on by being called a female since he's on Team Amazon ( An all girls team.) and since in your AU Cody's trans, he must have been super dysphoric and demotivated during that time since the only person he told was Sierra and no one knew so they didn't know anything was wrong.
