Pain Makes a Friend
Pain observed his reflection. It was slightly distorted by the currents, but otherwise he could see his image clearly. Sharp amber eyes peered from beneath narrowed brows. Pointed ears jutted out from the back of his skull. Notable nostrils rested on a muscular muzzle. Jagged scales lined the top of his head and lead down to his back. Pain huffed, watching his animated nostrils scrunch then stretch. To this day, he had yet to see anything like him.
Pain got off his front claws and continued sauntering along the coast line, his vigilant eyes scanning for anything edible. It had been many seasons since he first awoke in his new world. Since then he had learned many things. There were creatures as big as him, some even bigger, but most were puny like the little ones. The little ones made colonies of glowing rocks and other strange things. They also made and controlled metallic creatures designed to harm things like him. And most importantly, there was nothing that could kill him.
He spotted something washed up on the beach. He quickened his pace slightly. There was no reason to hurry, but he was eager to eat. As he got closer, the thing moved. It was still alive apparently, but that was no issue to Pain. The animal growled and snapped at the air with a powerful beak, warning of what it was capable of. Pain nearly snorted at the threat. When he was practically on top of it, the creature lunged at him. Pain dodged the attack and maneuvered to bite the creature's neck. It cried out which made Pain tighten his grip, his teeth digging further into the flesh. The animal continued struggling, flailing about to dislodge Pain's jaws. It moaned in agony. Once Pain had enough of the pathetic display, he quickly twisted his head, snapping the animal's neck. As much as he enjoyed toying with his food, he was hungry.
He happily dug into his meal, reveling as the warm blood smeared his lips. Fully enjoying the fine eating, Pain failed to notice something approaching. During a meaty bite, he spotted it eating his kill from the other side. It was brown and covered in spikes. It smelled male, roughly around Pain's age. After swallowing his mouthful, Pain emitted a warning shriek. Though the young male flinched, he did not cease eating. Well, he was warned.
Pain began charging, feeling the energy inside him build up in his dorsal fins. Once he felt he had enough, he released the energy from his maw. The male dodged the blast, rolling to the side. He puffed his chest, inhaling deeply. Then released an Earth shattering cry. Pain was launched back, now on the ground, he felt himself being pushed further still. Once the young male was out of breath, he recollected himself and shouted again. Pain hadn't felt such a thing since he was a pup in his old world when the forces of a hurricane were concentrated on him. And the sound was deafening. Pain shook his head to no avail, at that rate he'd go deaf.
No, he refused to let himself be pushed around. Especially from a freak with a loud roar. Pain began to charge again. He held onto the energy, waiting for the male to lose his breath. Once the opportunity presented itself, he unleashed his energy, aiming straight at the male's stupid face. The male cried out, the beam knocking him onto his back. Pain scrambled to his feet and rushed over to stomp his foot onto the male's exposed belly. Unlike his spiky back and tail, the male's belly was soft. He started charging, more than ready to end this troublesome juvenile's life. The brown male tried to ready his own attack, but Pain was quick to stomp the air out of him. The male wheezed, his brown eyes staring into Pain's. Despite the hopeless situation, there was no fear in his eyes, only determination. It was enough to make Pain hesitate.
Suddenly, the male's tail wacked Pain's thigh, the spikes pierced through the tough scales. Pain released his beam, the male swerving out of its path. The male's tail then dislodged itself and wrapped around the base of Pain's and jerked him back. Disoriented, Pain fell back with ease. Only when his dorsal fins had hit the ground did he realized what just happened. He scrambled to his feet, ready to continue the fight. But he was shocked to find that the male had began eating again.
Pain tilted his head, regarding his foe with a different perspective. The male had brazenly approached another creature, seemingly with no intention to fight. When he was attacked, he retaliated. When he was met with what could've been death, he had no fear, only determination. Then when he seemed to have won the fight, he continued with his business. An odd specimen.
For the first time since he'd awoken, Pain joined another creature to eat. He looked at the young male from across the corpse. He seemed to have no interest in Pain now that he was allowed to eat. Looking closer, Pain realized that the other male had a likeness to a creature from his old world. Although, the likeness was broad and the creature he remembered wasn't a predator. Then again, Pain himself was morbidly warped from his original image. Did the other male feel the same way? Did he also have a rude awakening in a strange world filled with strange creatures in a strange body? Was he scared once, too? Had he conquered that fear as well?
The male looked up from his meal. At first there was annoyance in them, but it quickly turned to something softer when they met Pain's gaze. Consideration perhaps? Or maybe sympathy? It would be the first anything looked at Pain with such thoughts. The male's eyes flicked down to Pain's body. Did he recognize him too? The male returned his gaze to Pain's eyes. They stood there for a moment. Both digging for something without knowing what they were searching for. Then the male huffed, breaking the eye contact. He moved away from the corpse and settled in the sand. Once he was comfortable, he looked at Pain expectantly. When Pain only stared stupidly at him, the male called out. It sounded beckoning, that's when it clicked. Pain limped over and settled next to the other male. Once Pain seemed comfortable, the male rested his head and closed his eyes. Pain did the same, already deciding a name for his new companion. Stubborn.
the kids online safety act passed the u.s. senate.
long story short (for anyone who hadn't heard of this before) the kids online safety act, aka kosa, is a bill that will censor online content and resources for lgbtq+ matters, reproductive healthcare, activism (INCLUDING PALESTINE AND LIKELY OTHER CRISES GOING ON LIKE IN CONGO OR SUDAN), mental health, etc. everywhere--its effects likely won't be contained to just america.
today, july 30th, 2024, the senate passed it 91-3. it has officially moved to the house of representatives.
is this a pretty massive setback? yes. do you have every right to be scared, sad, angry, or whatever else about this happening? absolutely. but should you give up hope completely? NO!
even though kosa passed the senate, the house is on break/august recess at the moment. we have around an entire month to get emails, calls, and faxes in to house reps, maybe more depending on when they decide to vote on it.
should it pass the house and get signed into law, we still have a whole 18 months before it actually goes into effect. this is plenty of time for digital rights orgs (e.g. fight for the future, the electronic frontier foundation) and other groups that oppose it to file a lawsuit against it. even if, worst-case scenario, it flies through the house immediately after the recess ends, we can still fight this up to march 2026.
so, yes, remember what's at stake here, but also remember that it's not over yet. we lost a battle, not the war.
below are some resources to learn more about kosa and how to contact your reps (first link) + a page that lets you directly contact progressive house reps, sign an open letter opposing the bill, and view others' testimonies against it (second link):

FIGHT. FIGHT. FIGHT.
