Phantom Holiday
I'm still finishing up the last chapters of Beneath Their Masks, don't worry. I just wanted to make sure this went up around the holidays. It'd be weird to read something like this right AFTER the holidays are over, right? Well, it wouldn't stop me, but it feels more fitting releasing it right now.
“Good afternoon. I’m writing a paper for homeroom about personal experiences with the holidays. If you wouldn’t mind helping me out, please reply with a quick summary of your experiences with Christmas and what it means to you. Names will be omitted, so don’t worry about that.” Ann said, reading it aloud for Makoto to double-check.
“Sounds good. I don’t imagine anyone will have an issue contributing. Although…” Makoto started.
“Hm? What’s up?”
“Why did you text me? I’m sitting right here…”
“Oh, well, if you put it in writing, then that means I don’t have to dictate.” Ann said, with a slight shrug.
“I…suppose that makes sense.” Makoto said.
“Think smart, not hard, Mako-chan!” Ann said, puffing out her chest. “Now, time for a break while I wait for everyone to write back. Coffee?”
“Please.”

Beneath Their Masks Chapter 27 is Up!
Kept ya waiting, huh?
I've got the last few chapters written and stuff. They just need to be posted. Massive thanks to @shuharu-blog-toadstar for helping me out!
Makoto’s knees stung as they collided with the pavement. All of her energy was completely gone and all she could focus on was the ringing in her ears and the nausea that overtook her, sweat dripping down her face. She wasn’t the only one. One-by-one, each of the thieves around her began to fall as the ringing grew louder and louder.
She heard Ryuji. He was yelling something, but Makoto could barely process what was going on. She brought her hand up to wipe her eye and…it was disappearing before her eyes, the rest of her arm following along with it, a sizzling blackness bubbling and hissing as it consumed the rest of her.
“This can’t be real, right?” Were the only words she could bring to her lips.
Ann. What about Ann?
Pulling her focus away from her hands (or lack thereof, in this case), she looked over to Ann. She had fallen to the ground, her own legs disappearing out from under her. Makoto’s heart, as fast as it was beating, sank. Was this the end? Had they failed? All that effort, and this was all they had to show for it? Disappearing into nothingness? Makoto couldn’t tell whether to be crushed by her own disappearance or Ann’s. Either possibility presented a future without Ann, not that it even presented a future at all. What would Sae think? Would she even know that Makoto had disappeared? Would the public cognition write them out of existence, entirely?
Did anything we did even matter? Did anything I do matter?
Makoto’s last thought was cut off by everything going black, her pained suffering extinguished by non-existence.
