HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 8
xBCrafted x Futurama

I drew xB in the style of Futurama!
So I was unsure of what to do for xB and played with a number of different ideas. But then I started fusing him with a guardian and I though if he is a guardian hybrid, wouldn't he only have one eye?
And you know what style definitely works well with a cycloptic character? That's right, Futurama!
Disclaimer: Futurama is an adult comedy cartoon. While it does have a lot of different kinds of humor, it frequently features adult jokes/themes and is definitely not PG.
I had a lot of fun designing this one since Futurama has a lot of non-human characters, so I really felt like I could really lean into the hybrid elements of this xB design.
If you want to learn more about Futurama and see my style references, please look below the cut. (Dont forget about the Gamers Outreach fundraiser! If you donate $50 tumblr artist rendiggitydog will draw a hermit for you.)
Futurama is an adult comedy about a delivery guy named Fry who accidentally gets cryogenically frozen and is awakened again in the far flung future, where he promptly ends up with another job as a delivery guy (but this time on a spaceship with aliens).
The show is one of my favorite western adult animated comedies. It is pretty clever for the genre and has a lot of really likeable characters. The character I referenced heavily for xB is Leela, Fry's love interest and a cool one-eyed spaceship captain.
If you are a fan of scifi (like me) you would probably really enjoy Futurama since it parodies a lot of well-known scifi. It frequently makes fun of Star Trek in particular (with love, of course).
Style references:

Various characters from the show - Fry is the redhead and Leela is the lady with one eye.

I really like Leela :)

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 7
Mumbo Jumbo x Don't Starve

I drew Mumbo Jumbo in the style of the spooky, open-world survival game Don't Starve!
I chose this one for Mumbo because he reminds me of the default protagonist of the game, Wilson, who is a gentleman inventor that creates fantastical science and alchemy machines.
I also just thought he would look great as a Don't Starve character. And I was right, he looks fantastic! This was one of the most satisfying pieces I've done so far because he just fits the style so naturally.
To learn more about Don't Starve and see my style references, please continue below the cut!
(Also, check out the Hermit a Day May fundraiser for Gamer's OutreachI)
Don't Starve is a spooky, yet cute, rogue-like survival game that takes place in a randomly generated open world.
You play as a character that has been dropped into an unforgiving other world. Your goal is to survive and, when you enter story mode, try to find and defeat the entity that has trapped you there.
The game is very difficult as you only have one life to gather supplies, build tools, and try and live as long as possible. Nearly everything tries to kill you, and you have to also monitor your sanity, hunger, and environmental conditions, which can also kill you. When you play this game you will die many, many times, but it is always fun to restart and figure out ways to survive more successfully the next time.
The style of the game is heavily inspired by Tim Burton and the gameplay itself is fairly reminiscent of Minecraft on hardcore mode. The world of Don't Starve is strange and at times a little unsettling, but also full of funny moments. Overall, the game is a delight to explore, just expect to die a lot. And anyway, there are always mods (lots of mods) if you want to make the game a little more forgiving.
Style references:

The style is very sketch-like with lots of points and spirals. The palette is muted with most (though not all) player characters being primarily red, white, and black (like Mumbo).

I made Mumbo a little taller than the average Don't Starve character since I imagine him as very tall in Minecraft. There is precedent for this in-game since the guy that brings you to the other world, Maxwell, is very tall.

The Don't Starve title font. I downloaded a font called October Crow to make the title for this piece, so it isn't exact, but I think it looks really close.
Wow you are using a small sketchbook! That's some impressive control in your detail work

jevin!!!!!!!!!! didn't have access to a scanner so this is my first (and hopefully last) sketchbook picture of the challenge... you can see the scale i'm actually working on here (i have small hands so my sketchbook looks bigger than it is) tbh i do not like how this came out but it was fun and i might recreate it digitally once the challenge is over
🥹 I'm so touched that my challenge has been part of the inspiration here!!

Hermit-a-Day May Day 7: Mumbo Jumbo. This is the first day I've actually finished (sort of) on time, but I'm hoping to catch up with the ones I've missed eventually.
I'm trying out doing each of this month's pieces in a different art medium and/or style, partially inspired by @elodee's cartoon style challenges. Today was my normal style, but in the medium of colored pencils! This was a ton of fun and I'm really proud of how it turned out, despite me feeling out of my depth the entire time.
I love this design for Mumbo, hes so cute!

Day 223

This is him. One of the only people that can help me find The Doctor. The Heavy-Body Builder.
One problem: The man is the definition of "Looks scary, is a wet cat of a man." He definitely TRIED to be intimidating, but he failed pretty miserably at it when I met him after being unconscious for 10 days.
(Yes I did a double take. I still can't believe I was out for THAT long)
Picture this: Me walking towards a towering city of collapsing buildings with dust filled air. Eyes focused on the small blinks of light that just barely escape the smog- I'm thinking that I've finally made it! Comparator City!
And then I get absolutely BODIED by a huge hunk of metal. I wish I were kidding. My poor spine! My arm! It got freaking CRUSHED! I was sent flying a decent few feet and ended up crashing into an old light pole (Again. OW.) All that I can remember happening next is that same hunk of metal approaching me and some guy jumping out of it. But then... Well. I was out like a light.
Managed to wake up (after what felt like) a few hours later and oh GOODNESS did it hurt. My back, my right side, my stump of an arm- It all hurt! But there was somebody in the very dim room with me. The same person that crawled out of that hunk of metal.
"Thank goodness you're awake!" He had said when I first gained consciousness. "I was worried that you wouldn't stabilize! You've been unconscious for over a week!"
"I've been WHAT?!" And of course, when I sat up I saw the damage the man had done to me. Machines were strapped all over my body, an IV drip sticking out of my arm (Where he found a clean needle I will not ask.) a whole heart rate monitor- He was stacked! But from the state of everything, he was telling me the truth. "You knocked me unconscious for a week?!"
"Well it's r-really been ten days-"
"TEN DAYS?!"
"Yes- Yes I know it sounds absolutely horrible but! But! You're recovering at an accelerated rate! You should be good to go in a few days? Maybe three? The experimental drug is working great for you!" He had been blabbering and talking so fast that I nearly missed that detail.
"Experimental- I'm sorry, EXPERIMENTAL DRUG?" Of course I had been outraged back then. (Even looking back now I'm still a bit ticked off at being used as a guinea pig for a drug that could have killed me, but hey! I'm alive now!) "You used an EXPERIMENTAL DRUG to heal me."
"Yes! And it worked!" He stepped away from me to grab my prosthetic arm. "And! And I managed to upgrade your arm! It got destroyed- Again I'm so sorry about that- but hey! At least now your map and compass aren't an extra item to carry around!"
"So you fixed the nerve sensors? The solar panels?"
"Uh- No. Unfortunately I don't have access to the receptors or the proper solar panels you need." He had explained while reattaching my arm. "But! But, it works a lot like mine!" He flashed his brass arm, glowing a soft red. "It's powered by redstone! Should last you a solid month before you need to recharge it!"
And there was the main problem. "How in the ever loving hell do I get this 'redstone' stuff? Heck, where could I even get it?"
"Easy! Me!" He flicked on a lever on the backside of my arm and it felt... Nice at the time. Sturdy. Like it wouldn't die on me when I needed it most. "I use the Parrot System, so as long as you can get mail through the Parrots you should be good!"
"... The who?"
You wouldn't believe me if I told you this man began to glow with embarrassment. I mean he LITERALLY glowed. Pointy ears and face turning a bright red that GLOWED.
"Right, uh- The parrots! They're one of the middle tier delivery birds! I'm friends with their Flight Master! I... I take it you have no idea who I'm talking about."
"Not a damn clue."
"First of all, watch your tongue. Second! That's okay! I should have enough in store that should last you about three months- But you really need to find the Flight Masters. They'll help you in the long run."
When he stopped his rambling I focused on the newly upgraded arm. It is always a weird sensation, flexing a limb that's not really there. But the small tug of metal fingers and steel plates listening to one's mind is even weirder. And I mean REALLY weird.
"Who... Exactly are these Flight Masters?" I managed to ask him after a few moments of silence. "How do you... Get under their wing?"
"That-" The man paused and the red glow only grew. "That was a horrible pun-" He has a really nice laugh. Small but breathless.
"But it works! I mean, they have to be Birds of a Feather to Fly together-"
"Stop! Stop, no!"
"When am I going to stop, huh?! Never!" And then I started to laugh. I think it was just my mind needing something to focus on other than the glaring new arm attached to my body.
"Goodness you may be worse than Gri-" His laughter died when he barely mentioned a name. I couldn't get all of it, but it must be the Flight Master.
"Worse than...?"
"Y-You will find out eventually." His tune changed from that point going forward.
He eventually gave me his name (Mumbo) and gave me a quick summary of the three Flight Masters.
The Canary: Flight Master of the small, yellow birds that linger around Comparator City. Used by the residents of said city. Apparently the easiest one to befriend.
The Parrot: Flight Master of the robotic parrots that fly around all over the Crashlands. They're more tricky to get a hold of as they have a whole database on who's a customer and who's not. Need to find the Parrot Flight Master in order to get on the list.
The Crow: Flight Master of the Murders. Every crow I have seen so far apparently belongs to Him. And apparently the only way to find him is a mystery to even Mumbo. All I can do is hope for the best with that one.
That was all the information he was willing to tell me. Apparently I struck a nerve by getting him to almost spill the name of the Parrot Flight Master. I'm still resting in this small room, letting myself recover from being plowed by that big old machine.
I even tried asking him what that THING was that he hit me with! But he just shook his head and said it was a prototype I shouldn't bother myself with.
Things are just getting really overwhelming now. So much information to process. How do I find the Canary? Or hell, the Parrot? I'm not even going to TOUCH the subject of the Crow. What about the Demon? Is he still around? Is he in Comparator City? Will I run out of the weird redstone dust before I find the Parrot?
So many questions.
Too little answers.
I think I'm just going to shut off my mind for a little bit.

Day 213

On my way through the Crashlands I met this odd fellow. It was under some... Unkind circumstances, but I'm grateful I met another person nonetheless.
However, I do wish we didn't meet trying to avoid ACID RAIN.
I still can't believe I have to write this out- Acid Rain?? Are you bloody serious?? What, am I going to learn that literal stars crash into the world as well?
(Actually, I take that back. I don't want to jinx anything like that being a possibility!)
But that is how I met this "Jevin" fellow. I had noticed the sky getting cloudy and had made a decent camp for the inevitable weather that was to come. However, this strange man came up to me about an hour before the rain actually came down.
"You don't plan on staying out here when it rains, I hope!"
"I don't see why not? It's good to see rain after so long. It's been nearly a year since I have seen rain out in the Crashlands! I'd like to collect a supply while I can!"
"There's a reason you haven't seen rain!" He had warned as he started to collect my bottles from the ground (despite my protests at the time.) "It pours freaking acid! The stuff can kill you if you're out for too long!"
"What?!"
"Yeah! It's one of the first rules of the Crashlands: Avoid the rain clouds! You didn't know that?!"
"Apparently not!"
We collected all my bottles I had laid out (only about five, but still a nuisance when three of them were glass) and he offered me a rain shelter for the night. (They're these small buildings made completely of tin! Apparently tin is resistant to the acid rain, so I'll make a note of that for future use.)
That's kind of where I am for the moment. Not a lot has happened since Keralis gave me the compass and map but I should be in Comparator City in just a couple of days. Hell, I should be able to see it by dusk tomorrow!
However... On a different note... This Jevin fellow is very interesting. His skin isn't like normal skin! It's transparent! And it holds a certain coldness to it? It's hard to understand. He's not a touchy kind of fellow either, seems to be more of a loner than anything.
The thing that has me thrown off the most is the skeleton. His skeleton is VISIBLE. Through his SKIN. It's... A bit unnerving. But also intriguing at the same time. What happened to him, I wonder?
A question for another day, I suppose.
