Actually I also can't stop thinking about Erik's muttered "It's not that I don't trust you," to Charles, right before he puts on the helmet and shuts Charles out in First Class. Because with Days of Future Past in mind, it rings true. It's not that Erik doesn't trust Charles, it's more that he knows him.

In DOFP, when Raven takes away Erik's helmet and Charles controls him-- to remove the wreckage from himself, to stop him from killing more people-- Erik doesn't get mad. He doesn't even seem surprised. All he does is remind Charles that if he leaves him to be captured by the humans, he's as good as dead. And then Charles lets him go, without doing anything else.

Erik considers Charles using his powers in combat as fair play. He knows Charles can't allow people to die, won't condone murder. He's very aware what Charles' line is, and most of the time what he does is work with it or around it. "I'm going to kill Shaw, do you have it in you to allow that?" And Charles never gives a definitive yes or no. So Erik takes away the possibility of Charles saving Shaw-- without access to Erik's mind, Charles can only either let Shaw die or release him, risking Erik's life. If anything, Erik trusts Charles to choose him, and it's the same in DOFP. Charles still chooses not to put Erik in danger by letting him get captured, no matter what Erik might do afterwards. Even when Erik pulls the gun on Raven, breaking Charles' heart all over again, he coldly says "He can't," when Raven pleads with Charles to control Erik and stop him. He wouldn't have attempted the murder if Charles had been capable of interfering, knowing for sure he would've done it.

In the end, I feel like Erik does trust Charles. With his life, with his autonomy. To the extent of using it as a certainty in his manipulations. But he doesn't trust Charles to betray his beliefs for him, much like he wouldn't betray his own for Charles. The flippant jokes about how Charles could make him do anything when the helmet's off, to me always seemed like ways to test Charles and reassert this trust-- this boundary between who they are as leaders in a fight for the freedom of mutants, and who they are to each other as people. Professor X gets to stop Magneto in a fight... but Charles doesn't get to force Erik to change.

There's so much that's insane about the scene in First Class where Charles is waiting for Erik, knowing he'd stolen the CIA files and was planning to run away. But upon rewatch what's getting me is realizing that in so many ways... in it, Charles is doing the same thing he did with Raven. As a child.

He catches her stealing, but realizes she's like him. And essentially, the next thing he does is provide. He tells her she can take the food, that she never has to steal again, because he'll give her what she needs. And in return she stays, in return Charles isn't alone in being different.

With Erik, it's even more intense, but it's the same. Charles believes that if he can provide, then people will stay. After saving Erik from drowning, Charles deep down thinks he's already owed staying. He tells Erik that he can help, and scoffs at Erik when he rebukes it. "Don't kid yourself. You needed my help last night. It's not just me you're walking away from," is a pretty crazy thing to say to a guy you literally just met, and with such bitterness. Then he empasizes how he could force Erik to stay, but won't... because "Shaw's got friends, you could do with some." It's once again a play on what advantage staying could give Erik.

Which is why Charles holding Shaw still, suffering through all that horrible pain, makes me want to chew glass. Charles had more than one option, if he didn't want to let things unfold the way they did. I always did wonder-- couldn't he have controlled Shaw so that he knocked Erik out, and then put him to sleep? Control Shaw's powers through Shaw? Put Shaw to sleep, period, and then never suffer what came after? But no, Charles literally chooses to serve Shaw to Erik on a platter, all while Erik's counting down. His revenge, the thing he wanted the most, frozen in place and aware as he died slowly.

But Erik doesn't stop at Shaw, doesn't change his way of thinking, doesn't choose Charles' path. All that Charles gave wasn't enough-- not for him, and not for Raven, who ultimately leaves him too.

One Of My Favourite Lines Is When Hannibal Says "I Don't Hide From God" Before Eating The Ortolans In

One of my favourite lines is when Hannibal says "I don't hide from God" before eating the ortolans in Ko No Mono.

How Mads delivers it. The way Hannibal seems to be barely concealing his anger, his voice slightly trembling with grudge. God failed him, and he has a personal war going on to expose His hypocrisy. God kills, lets innocents die, and then has the audacity to set Himself up as judge of humanity while being the first to enjoy their suffering.

Hannibal feels entitled to do all kinds of wicked things, because he knows that no matter how hard he tries, he will never be as cruel as Him.

Hannibal refuses to cover his head, he wants God to be witness of his evil deeds, and once again, do nothing.

When Mischa died, where was God?

When she cried Hannibal's name, and he was too weak to save her - just a young boy scratching the locked stable door with his nails trying to reach her and stop her killers - was God enjoying the scene? Hannibal might be a monster, the devil himself, but he's nothing compared to his Creator.

This is one of the rare moments in which Hannibal slips out of his person suit, where he lets Will see him. Not his monster nature, but his vulnerability.

"I let you know me. See me."

Favourite X Men angst fanfic concept I love (and even when it’s analysed in canon) is the whole Mutant and Proud motto where they show that due to his mutation not being trusted Charles isn’t included in that motto.

It’s so sad in fics when he’s told to rein in his telepathic mutation where other mutants are encouraged to show their mutations.

The potential of this fic trope is:

Charles!Whump - Headaches, Illness

Protectiveness - Moments where the rest of the First Class group are protective of him when they realise and argue on his behalf with the people who are hurting him (it’s mostly Raven or Erik who are the ones who unintentionally hurt him which is such good angst if it focuses on Cherik or Charles and Raven’s sibling relationship)

Cherik (because of course)

It’s just so good but I need it to have happy endings or I’ll cry
