Rest in Peace, Stefán Karl Stefánsson. Thank you for bringing joy and laughter to children and us weird adults on the internet.

A California teacher teaching the physics of surfing, 1970.

Is anyone annoyed with how merfolk are always pictured as one half completely fish and the other completely human? I mean, sure, it’s mythological, but it has to have SOME logic. I’ve seen some people’s takes on what a more realistic mer-person would look like, so I decided to make mine. - Merfolk skin would ABSOLUTELY NOT be the black/brown/tan/peachy color us humans are. Instead, due to being part fish and living underwater at a reasonably large depth, they will probably have a skin variation on greyish-white with a hint of blue, green, or purple. For mermaids from different areas, darker and lighter colors (whitish to blackish mixed with fish-like colors) will vary. - Merfolk would most likely have more fish-like eyes, due to spending most of their time in the water. Mermaids can see almost, but not quite, as good on land as they can underwater. - Due to their size and what lives underwater, their diet is probably the same as dolphins and sharks, which probably means they would most likely have sharp teeth. But, that doesn’t mean that sometimes they will try to enjoy sea plants every once in a while! - I’m going to be honest, merfolk would probably not have any hair; instead, they would either have a large fin on their head or be entirely bald. But, if there is to be a possibility, they could have hair if the scalp made a natural mowhawk that worked like a fin. (Like how I designed it here. In my opinion, it looks better, too.) (They would probably customize it in different ways, like length, part lines, etc.) - Mermaids most likely do not have breasts, due to probably having a reproduction system similar to a shark’s or a dolphin’s. - Merfolk have webbed hands and fins on their forearms / over their ears to better help with steering. - Merfolk would either be able to hold their breath for astonishing amounts of time (They have been spotted by sailors most likely because they are coming up to breathe.), or they would have two respiratory systems, the human half, which breathes air, and the fish / water mammal half, which breathes water. - There would most likely be different species, or at least variations, of merfolk. (For example, mostly fish, mostly mammal, saltwater, freshwater, fish type, underwater mammal type, etc.)
