The whole "has autisim" vs "is autistic" debate is far more complex that people think.

While, yes, "it's up to the individual how they identify" sounds nice it's actually a very problematic way of viewing things.

Autistic people, from the moment they're realized to be autistic, are forced to believe the narrative that autism is a disease that has changed them fundamentally from what they were supposed to be. "I have autism, autism doesn't have me" is something that I've heard countless times and it sounds almost inspirational if you believe that autism is something that needs to be beaten.

Autism isn't a disease and there's nothing wrong with being autistic. Autistic is a label that describes how we're different from others. It's not dehumanizing to call someone autistic.

The autistic people who say things like "I have autism, I'm not my disorder" are victims of this false narrative and are trying to distance themselves from the autistic label. They have been taught that being autistic is a bad thing and they need to "overcome" it.

Autistic is a description the same as any other adjective. If you think it's dehumanizing to say someone is autistic then it's also dehumanizing to say someone is beautiful or funny. The only reason you might think it's bad is because you think being autistic is bad.

If you have to distance yourself from your disorder to be seen as a human being and be respected then the issue isn't the label you choose it's the people around you who think it's bad to be autistic.
